Welcome to the Year 4 Blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below. Log in details for Spelling Frame or TT Rock Stars can be found on the inside cover of your child's Reading Record book.

Lent

Lent_purple_cross.jpg
It isn't just about giving something up for Lent.
Lent represents turning away from temptations.

If something, or someone, has upset you, it is so easy to say something, or do something, which you might regret later.
Resist that temptation, and do the right thing.

During Lent, we are encouraging random acts of kindness - something which will make your day, and someone else's day, just that little bit better!
Each week, an example of this will be posted on the blog!

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"

Please note that reading books will be changed when completed. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.

Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 13th February (see the files section on our Year 4 class page for the spelling overview for Spring Term 1).

Geography Fact of the Week!

Capture.JPG

Mrs. Macdonald (our Geography boffin) has had a great idea! To make sure our knowledge of the world is solid, each class will be spotlighting a different country in Europe. We have Denmark!

Each week, we will find and share a new fact on the blog...

King Frederik X succeed his mother, Margrethe II, to the Danish throne in January 2024. Margrethe, who reigned for 52 years, became the first Danish monarch to voluntarily abdicate in over 800 years.

In his first speech to Danes, King Frederik said his task of becoming "a unifying king of tomorrow" was something he had approached all of his life.

"It's a task I've taken on with pride, respect and joy."

Queen Margrethe became monarch only because a change in the law in 1953 allowed a woman to ascend to the throne. She succeeded on the death of her father, King Frederik IX, in 1972.

Maths Problem of the Week

Each week, a new maths problem will appear on the blog... Can you solve it?

The answers will be posted in next week's blog!

Our learning this week in Year 4

English

We have been looking at a very important sentence structure this week - a complex sentence.

We have played around with the idea of starting with a main clause, or starting with a subordinate clause. We have looked at a wide variety of subordinating conjunctions. And most importantly, we have got a clear understanding that, if you start with a subordinate clause, then your clauses MUST be seperated with a comma.

Main clause = I went outside

Subordinate clause = even though it was raining

Complex sentences

I went outside even though it was raining.

Even though it was raining, I went outside.

Maths

We have been looking at symmetry this week, focusing particularly on explaining whether a line of symmetry has been drawn correctly or incorrectly. Interestingly, although mirrors were provided, we were split opinions on whether they helped or hindered.

World Book Day

Harry-Potter-&-The-Philosophers-Stone-J-K-Rowling-&-MinaLima.jpg

Due to Science Week, we held World Book Day on Wednesday instead. We looked at one of the most famous books in history - Harry Potter.

We read a chapter of the book, before watching the same section of the film. Using a venn diagram, we compared the similarities and differences between the two. Intestingly, the book holds far more detail and description... I think there might be a few more Harry Potter books in class next week!

Safeguarding - morning routine

If you are dropping off your child at the classroom door/  KS2 entrance door and need to pass a message on to a member of staff please do so by speaking to the staff member who monitors the door in the morning. If you need to enter school for any other reason, adults can only enter the school building via the main school entrance and seek assistance from the school office team. If you are attending a meeting with a member of staff, you must sign in at the front desk as a visitor and have an ID lanyard.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school and children safe.

Have a fantastic weekend!
