Music

‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,’ Philippians 4:13

Ms Lucas leads Music across school.

Music is an extremely important subject for all children to learn and can lead to better brain development, increases in human connection, and even stress relief.

As one of the most creative art forms, music is a unique and universal method of communication which enriches children’s lives. The benefits of music education are manifold: as well as developing talent and inspiring a love and appreciation of music, it is a tool for personal expression.

In my role as subject leader I ensure we provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music. In Key Stage Two our music curriculum is taught by a specialist music teacher and all children are given the opportunity to learn an instrument.

Music Curriculum

We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music. During their time at Euxton CE Primary, all children have the opportunity to play a brass or woodwind instrument. They also have the opportunity to perform in front of their peers and families to celebrate their musical progression and achievements. We recognise that, as music reflects the culture and society we live in, so the teaching and learning of music allows children to better understand their world. We give children the opportunity to listen to and appreciate a wide variety of music from different traditions and eras. We also utilise the many cross curricular links that music has with other subjects, for example English, history, geography and PSHE.

Assessment

In class, teachers monitor the progress of individual children and differentiate lessons to suit the different needs of learners. In KS2 each class teacher discusses the children’s progress with our specialist teacher. Photographs, videos and reflections from pupils are used as evidence. The subject leader explores pupil’s opinions about the teaching of music through observations and interviews with selected pupils. The subject leader acts upon the comments and suggestions of pupils wherever possible.

Focus for this year

Create an Euxton model of assessment (5 checkpoints) which embeds retrieval practices and supports a robust monitoring and assessment cycle.
