Y4 Friday Blog - 15/11/24

Date: 15th Nov 2024 @ 8:16am

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 4 Friday blog!

Information Update

As part of PSHE, we have been looking at the difference between a male and female body, how they change as you get older, and what is appropriate and inappropriate touching. Y4 were very mature when delaing with this, and took away the most important information, if anything is making you uncomfortable in any way, tell a trusted adult.

Please follow the link below to access the NSPCC resources for keeping privates private.

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below. Log in details for Spelling Frame or TT Rock Stars can be found on the inside cover of your child's Reading Record book.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"

Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week . Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.

Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 21st November (see the files section on our Year 4 class page for the spelling overview for Autumn Term 2).

In Year 4, the Statutory Multiplication Check must be completed before the 14th June, and any help you can provide at home would massively benefit your child. Times tables tests are now available in class for any child who wants to take one home for additional homework, and each week, I will attach a new test to the blog, if you would rather print off at home.

If you need any additional information about the MTC, please don't hesitate to come and ask. Additionally, information can be found by following this link. https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/multiplication-tables-check

Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all of their times tables, up to 12x12. For the Autumn Term, 7s, 9s and 12s will be practised in class, however any practice at home, no matter how small, will hugely benefit the children.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

An overview for spellings can be found at the bottom of the blog. Times Tables will be added in future terms.

It's important that you use the latest versions of the app and website to ensure you receive the most secure, feature-rich and enjoyable experience of Times Tables Rock Stars.

Solution - if you're playing at home

If using the website at home, please ask visit play.ttrockstars.com/reset to load the latest version in your device's browser. Otherwise update the Times Tables Rock Stars app from the app store.

Our learning this week in Year 4

English

Before we begin writing our own story, we need to make sure we set the scene. Imagine Lila moved to India as she said she would. What would she see? What would she smell? How would she feel? We used adjectives, descriptive phrases and a variety of sentence structures to put together a fabulous scene.

One of my personal favourites was, 'The sky was an ombre shade of yellow and red, creating a firey, flaming horizon in the distance.'

Maths

Maths this week was hard, dividing a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number, using chunking. Thankfully, our times tables knowledge is strong, and this made it much easier. To follow, we were then dividing a 2-digit number by 10, using decimals rather than remainders.

Children in Need

To raise awareness for Children in Need, we watched a clip of Gladiators, and some of the strange tasks they were given to raise money. Obviously, if they can do it, we can do it too! We set up an arena in the hall to see if we could match them - muscle for muscle!
