Y4 Friday Blog - 31/01/25
Date: 29th Jan 2025 @ 2:38pm
Welcome to the Year 4 Blog!
Important Update!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"
Please note that reading books will be changed when completed. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 6th February (see the files section on our Year 4 class page for the spelling overview for Spring Term 1).

Geography Fact of the Week!
This half term, our Geography topic is to locate the world’s countries, using maps to focus on Europe. We will then be focussing on France, deep diving into their capital city!
Each week, we will find and share a new fact on the blog... Here is our first fact
Why is Paris known as The City of Light?
It might not be for the reasons you think…
In the early 19th century, Paris became the first city in Europe to use gas lighting to illuminate its streets, thus earning its name as the City of Light. However, that’s not the only reason Paris earned this nickname…
In the 17th and 18th centuries, an intellectual movement known as the Enlightenment became popular within the western world. The key idea behind the movement was the use and celebration of reason, with the core goals for humankind being knowledge, freedom, and happiness. Important figures of the movement included Francis Bacon and Benjamin Franklin.
But what was the key location for the great change in how humanity thought about the world? Paris, of course! The cafés and coffeehouses of 18th century Paris provided a place for intellectual conversations where philosophers developed new ideas and theories.
To put it simply, Age of Enlightenment + Paris = The City of Light.
Maths Problem of the Week
Each week, a new maths problem will appear on the blog... Can you solve it?
The answers will be posted in next week's blog!
Previous week's answers...

Our learning this week in Year 4
English
Our modelled write is finished, and we have now started our independent write.
Our modelled write was from the perspective of a Thief Dog... Can Y4 use that model to help them write their own story, but from the perspective of the mayor? This is definitely the hardest change we have made so far, and it has caused a bit of head scratching, but I know that we will absolutely nail it!
Maths
In Maths, we have been looking at halving numbers up to thousands, including decimal places!
It started simple, halving numbers which only included even digits. However, it then got harder, asking us to halve a number similar to '3528.4' ... Wow!
Have a fantastic weekend!
