Y4 Friday Blog - 6/9/24

Date: 5th Sep 2024 @ 3:44pm

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 4 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below. Log in details for Spelling Frame or TT Rock Stars can be found on the inside cover of your child's Reading Record book.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"

Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week . Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.

Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 12th September (see the files section on our Year 4 class page for the spelling overview for Autumn Term 1).

Times tables -  Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all of their times tables, up to 12x12. For the Autumn Term, 7s, 9s and 12s will be practised in class, however any practice at home, no matter how small, will hugely benefit the children.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

An overview for spellings can be found at the bottom of the blog. Times Tables will be added in future terms.

Our learning this week in Year 4

The children have settled into Year 4 nicely this week. Mrs. Wiles started off the week by looking at a growth mindset in class, before creating word mats to allow children to support their own learning. Mr. Astle, alongside maths and English, has started our History topic on the Romans, supported by some fantastic pictures sent in from a recent visitor! Thank you Ella :)

English

This week, the children have been introduced to our class text, 'Escape from Pompeii' and they have made predictions and asked questions based on the front cover, and blurb, of the book. This will lead on to inference skills of how the characters are feeling, backing up these ideas with evidence from the text.

 Maths

We have been focusing on number and place value in maths this week. Thousands, hundreds, tens and ones was far too easy for Y4, so we had a look at tenths and even hundreths! We were able to successfully partition any number to one decimal place, and identify the value in each column.

History

In our History session this week, the children all enjoyed finding Rome on a map, correctly identifying the country and continent it is in. It was also surprising how close Italy is to Africa - no wonder it is so hot there!

Harvest Celebrations
On Thursday 12th September, we will be walking to church after registration. Children can bring in a donation of non-perishable food to place on the alter (they must be able to carry them). These items will be taken to Chorley foodbank. Thank you in advance.

Courageous Advocacy Reminder
Courageous Advocacy
Calling all 'Agents of Change!'

As you may be aware from blogs posted during the summer term, we are very excited to be introducing Courageous Advocacy into our curriculum. This supports the ethos and values of our school and the work we already do in learning about people from different backgrounds and environments. However, it is not just about fundraising but projects that can effect change.

What Is Courageous Advocacy?
The act of speaking out against an issue of injustice, often on behalf of someone who cannot be heard.
Must be informed about an issue and move beyond knowing to saying and doing.
It takes courage!

Over the summer holidays, we asked the children to start thinking about what they are passionate about and what we could do as a project in school.

Next week, our class worship will be used to share and discuss these ideas that then can be presented to the rest of the school.

Please remind your child to bring in their thoughts/ideas for next week's class worship on Tuesday.

Have a look at our gallery to see some of the photographs taken throughout the first week in Year 4.

Have a fantastic weekend!
