Y4 Friday Blog - 8/11/24
Date: 6th Nov 2024 @ 8:38am
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 4 Friday blog!
Information Update!
Odd Socks Day marks the start of Anti-Bullying Week. Odd Socks Day 2024 is taking place on Tuesday 12th November. It is supported by CBeebies presenter & ABA patron Andy Day and his band 'Andy and the Odd Socks'.
The Andy and the Odd Socks team came up with the idea for Odd Socks Day with us in 2017, and we work together every year to deliver the all inclusive message the event encourages.
Most importantly, Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique!
There is no pressure to wear the latest fashion or to buy expensive costumes. All you have to do to take part is wear odd socks to your school, at work of at home, it couldn’t be simpler! Odd Socks day will take place on the first day of Anti-Bullying Week each year to help raise awareness of bullying. We would like to invite participating schools and workplaces to ask participants to make a £1 donation - or any donation you think appropriate - to support us in continuing to coordinate the week every year.
Next Friday 15th November, we will support Children in Need by having a sporty day inspired by the Gladiators! Children to come to school in sporty clothes on Friday to take part in an obstacle course using the large apparatus in the school hall. (Please note children to wear school uniform on Tuesday and sporty clothes on Friday). We will also watch the Children in Need live stream for schools in the morning after assembly. A £1 donation is suggested and we will send all donations to this special charity.
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week . Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 14th November (see the files section on our Year 4 class page for the spelling overview for Autumn Term 2).

In Year 4, the Statutory Multiplication Check must be completed before the 14th June, and any help you can provide at home would massively benefit your child. Times tables tests are now available in class for any child who wants to take one home for additional homework, and each week, I will attach a new test to the blog, if you would rather print off at home.
If you need any additional information about the MTC, please don't hesitate to come and ask. Additionally, information can be found by following this link. https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/multiplication-tables-check
Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all of their times tables, up to 12x12. For the Autumn Term, 7s, 9s and 12s will be practised in class, however any practice at home, no matter how small, will hugely benefit the children.
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
An overview for spellings can be found at the bottom of the blog. Times Tables will be added in future terms.
It's important that you use the latest versions of the app and website to ensure you receive the most secure, feature-rich and enjoyable experience of Times Tables Rock Stars.
Solution - if you're playing at home
If using the website at home, please ask visit play.ttrockstars.com/reset to load the latest version in your device's browser. Otherwise update the Times Tables Rock Stars app from the app store.
Our learning this week in Year 4
English
We have had a huge focus on inference this week, looking at how the firework-makers daughter must have felt when she finally decided to run away from home. We have extended the goodbye letter she wrote to her father, adding her emotions and feelings; we have written a diary entry from the morning she left, explaining her thoughts in the moments before. The book has got off to a really interesting start!
Maths
Our multiplication topic has taken another turn, introducing the 'grid method' for the first time. Because of our constant fluency practice, we are already very confident when multiplying using partitioning, so the grid method was a piece of cake! Let's see what comes next...
TTRockstars
It's strange to have a TTRockstars section on our blog, but here it is! The competition in Y4 is heating up nicely - the top 4 times in the class are covered by less than a second, and they are only getting quicker. To make things even more impressive, the top 6 times in the class are all under 3 seconds per question - this includes typing time!
Have a look at our gallery to see some of the photographs taken in Year 4.
Have a fantastic weekend!
