Year 1 Blog - Friday 10th January
Date: 8th Jan 2025 @ 5:42pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 1 Friday blog!
Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year. Thank you again for your cards and kind gifts for the Year 1 team.
Please see the class page for the currciulum overview and the updated spelling lists.
Reading
Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key comprehension skills. If your child is struggling to read a word, encourage them to use their phonics fingers to segment and sound it out. Can they spot any digraphs? (2 letters, 1 sound). Once they have segmented the word, ask them to blend it together.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week . Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Please also continue to practise the sounds sent home before Christmas.
Spellings
To help practise their weekly spellings, the children now have access to spelling frame. This is an online platform used throughout school with interactive games and spellings tests for the children to use. I am able to see how the children are performing throughout the week and there is a leader board to keep track of their points. Please click on the image below for a shortcut to Spelling Frame.
We will continue to quiz the children each Thursday.
English
In English we have started to look at Traditional Tales. Over the next few weeks we will be focussing on Little Red Ridng Hood.
This week we have learnt some new vocabulary from the story. Ask your children if they can remember what each word means and put it into a sentence.
Maths
In Maths we have been looking at repeating patterns and sorting different objects.

After learning the names of the continents earlier in the year, it was time to learn about the oceans.
