Year 1 Friday Blog 06.09.24
Date: 4th Sep 2024 @ 12:31pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 1 Friday blog!
Please read through our first blog as there is lots of important information to share with you.
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, our weekly spellings, reminders and lots more!
Phonics
This year, the children will continue on their phonics jourmey through Little Wandle. This half term we will recap our phase 2 and 3 sounds and tricky words.
Please use the link below to access the Little Wandle website. It has lots of useful information and videos to help support your child.
PE
Sporty Day clothes continue to be worn on a Tuesday. PE will also take place on a Wednesday. Please ensure full PE kit is in school at all times, just in case we need to swap our day.
Homework
Reading
Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key comprehension skills.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week . Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings
Please find below the spelling list for this week. An overview of the spellings for this half term can be found on our class page.
The spellings are linked to our phonics programme, Little Wandle. Please recap the graphemes, spellings and tricky words with the children. The children will have a spelling quiz each Thursday. They will not be asked to write the tricky words as these are used throughout our writing in the week.
Spellings can be practised in lots of different ways, an overview of some strategies has been shared on the blog. For additional practice, in the files to download section of our class page, there are example sentences for you to read and your child to write down. Remind them to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
Our learning this week in Year 1
The children have been amazing this week and settled quickly into their new routine. We have spent the week getting to know each other, exploring the classroom and taking part in lots of different activities.
Throughout the week we have read the book 'Giraffes can't dance' and found out all about Gerald the Giraffe. We learnt the first page of the book with actions and the children are eager to share it with you. |
Harvest Celebrations
On Thursday 12th September, we will be walking to church after registration. Children can bring in a donation of non-perishable food to place on the alter (they must be able to carry them). These items will be taken to Chorley foodbank. Thank you in advance.
Courageous Advocacy Reminder
Courageous Advocacy
Calling all 'Agents of Change!'
As you may be aware from blogs posted during the summer term, we are very excited to be introducing Courageous Advocacy into our curriculum. This supports the ethos and values of our school and the work we already do in learning about people from different backgrounds and environments. However, it is not just about fundraising but projects that can effect change.
What Is Courageous Advocacy?
The act of speaking out against an issue of injustice, often on behalf of someone who cannot be heard.
Must be informed about an issue and move beyond knowing to saying and doing.
It takes courage!
Over the summer holidays, we asked the children to start thinking about what they are passionate about and what we could do as a project in school.
Next week, our class worship will be used to share and discuss these ideas that then can be presented to the rest of the school.
Have a look at our gallery to see some of the photographs taken throughout the first week in Year 1.
Have a fantastic weekend!
