Year 1 Friday Blog - 29.11.24
Date: 23rd Oct 2024 @ 10:42am
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 1 Friday blog!
Each week you will continue to find out what we have been doing in class, our weekly spellings, reminders and lots more!
Reading
Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key comprehension skills. If your child is struggling to read a word, encourage them to use their phonics fingers to segment and sound it out. Can they spot any digraphs? (2 letters, 1 sound). Once they have segmented the word, ask them to blend it together.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week . Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Phonics & Spellings
Please find below the spelling list for this week. An overview of the spellings for this half term can be found on our class page.
The spellings are linked to our phonics programme, Little Wandle. Please recap the graphemes, spellings and tricky words with the children. The children will have a spelling quiz each Thursday. They will not be asked to write the tricky words as these are used throughout our writing in the week.
Spellings can be practised in lots of different ways, an overview of some strategies has been shared on the blog. For additional practice, in the files to download section of our class page, there are example sentences for you to read and your child to write down. Remind them to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
This week in phonics we have started to learn our split digraphs.
We have also been singing this song to help us remember our tricky words.
Our learning this week...
English
In English, we have been using our prediciton and sequencing skills whilst reading The Old Toy Room.
Maths
In Maths this week we have started to learn about 2D shapes. This will continue next week, along with learning about 3D shapes.
Oracy- National No Pens Day
As part of National No Pens Day, we played a number of games to help develop our oracy skills. The children loved playing the 1-20 numbers game. All of of the games focused on the use of social and emotional skills, including:
working with others
listening & responding
speaking with confidence and showing awareness of the audience.
The children were also amazing speakers and active listeners during our show and tell session.
School Council Elections
Congratulations to our new school council representatives for Year 1. I am sure they will do a fantastic job. Well done to all children who gave a speech.
Show and Tell
To help the children with the transition to Year 1 and to provide them with time to develop their communicaiton skills, show and tell will now happen on a Friday. Please encourage the children to bring things in that are related to our learning.
Have a fantastic weekend.
