Year 1 Friday Blog - 22.11.24
Date: 23rd Oct 2024 @ 10:42am
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 1 Friday blog!
Each week you will continue to find out what we have been doing in class, our weekly spellings, reminders and lots more!
Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school.
Reading
Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key comprehension skills. If your child is struggling to read a word, encourage them to use their phonics fingers to segment and sound it out. Can they spot any digraphs? (2 letters, 1 sound). Once they have segmented the word, ask them to blend it together.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week . Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Phonics & Spellings
Please find below the spelling list for this week. An overview of the spellings for this half term can be found on our class page.
The spellings are linked to our phonics programme, Little Wandle. Please recap the graphemes, spellings and tricky words with the children. The children will have a spelling quiz each Thursday. They will not be asked to write the tricky words as these are used throughout our writing in the week.
Spellings can be practised in lots of different ways, an overview of some strategies has been shared on the blog. For additional practice, in the files to download section of our class page, there are example sentences for you to read and your child to write down. Remind them to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
Spellings this week is a review of some of our new sounds.
We have also been singing this song to help us remember our tricky words.
Our learning this week...
English
This week we have started to explore old and new toys, and to support our learning in this area, we are reading The Old Toy Room. Children enjoyed predicting what sort of toys could be inside the old toy room. Our grammar focus this week was using adjectives to describe things.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been continuing to use a part part whole to help us solve addition and subtraction questions. We have also been practising our number bonds to 10.
NO PENS DAY - Wednesday 27th November
In partnership with Speech and Language UK we will be celebrating No Pens Day on Wednesday 27th November. It is a chance for children to put their pens down, talk, listen, and take part in lots of pen-free activities. On this day we would like all children to bring something in from home to share for the biggest ever Show and Tell. This could be a picture, a book, an article or something they have made. The list goes on. Please take some time to have a conversation with your child(ren) about what they are bringing in and why.
Well done to all the children who applied to be on school council. The speeches were fantastic. The children will find out next week, who has been elected.
Have a fantastic weekend.
