Year 2 Friday Blog- 10.1.25
Date: 5th Jan 2025 @ 3:57pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 2 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 16th January (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling/times tables overview for Spring Term 1). Children learn spellings of words through use of a variety of strategies. Your child might prefer to write them down, say them aloud to an adult or use a combination of methods.

Times tables - Times tables are a vital skill. On January 16th , the children will be tested on the 2x tables (in a random order).
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
Handwriting Homework
To help support your child’s learning, I would like all of the children to use the letter chart below to write given sentences at home.
Choose five or more of the spellings from the spelling list shown above (knocking, knitting etc.). Write a sentence for each of the words chosen. Remember to use capital letters, full stops and conjunctions (and, but, because etc.). These sentences are not to be handed in at school.
Our learning this week in Year 2
English
This week in English, we have started our new topic, A Bear Called Paddington (focusing on the original story of Paddington Bear). Before writing a detailed description of Paddington, we thought about our own teddy bears and what is special about them. We collected new vocabulary from the text and wrote the definitions in our words, before using the new vocabulary in our sentences.
Maths
In our maths lessons this week, we have been focusing on Number and Place Value. We have been adding 10 to given numbers, placing 3 numbers in order, identifying numbers on a bead string, placing a 2-digit number on a number line, as well as rounding 2-digit numbers to the nearest 10.
Geography
Our topic this half term is on the United Kingdom. Firstly, we had a class quiz to see how much information we could recall from our previous learning in Year 1. Then we labelled the continents on a map of the world. Next week, the children will label a map of the United Kingdom, using an atlas to identify the different countries and capital cities of the UK.
Have a look at our gallery to see some of the photographs taken during our geography lesson this week.
Glimmers
We have been looking out for glimmers this week. I have loved hearing about any glimmers the children have spotted throughout the week.
Have a fantastic weekend!
