Year 2 Friday Blog- 11.10. 24
Date: 8th Oct 2024 @ 8:33pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 2 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 17th October (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling overview for Autumn Term 1). Children learn spellings of words through use of a variety of strategies. Your child might prefer to write them down, say them aloud to an adult or use a combination of methods.

Times tables - Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. We will focus on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 2. Weekly times tables quizzes will not be given in Autumn Term 1.
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
An overview for spellings can be found at the bottom of the blog. Times Tables will be added in future terms.
Our learning this week in Year 2
Wellbeing Week
The children have made me so proud during Wellbeing Week. They were put into groups with children from each year group and enjoyed a carousel of activities set out in different areas of the school. Each child enjoyed decorating a biscuit, making a poster using the PicCollage app, sharing books with a partner, joining in with mindfulness and circle time sessions, as well as playing games using the parachute. The yoga session with Miss Rebecca was also a huge hit with the children, the focus being on taking 'animal breaths' to help with relaxation. Getting the large apparatus out in the PE session on Wednesday was also a huge success, with all children having the chance to sample the climbing frame at their own pace.
Hello Yellow
On World Mental Health Day, we wore yellow clothing and accessories to school, along with thousands of others across the UK. Thank you for helping us raise money for the Young Minds charity, showing young people that they’re not alone with their mental health.
We stand brighter, together.
Some wellbeing activities to try at home:
Please see the Doodle Boy doodle sheet and the Wellbeing Bingo activity sheet on the Files to Download section on our class page.
English
This week in English, we have been using our inference skills to imagine what the sparrows would have said to Peter Rabbit when they spotted him sobbing after his jacket became caught in a net. We have also imagined that we are Mr. McGregor and answered questions posed by the children.
Maths
In maths lessons this week, we have been adding two 2-digit numbers and using the terms total and altogether. We have also been learning how to subtract 2- digit numbers from other 2- digit numbers, using base 10 apparatus, bar models and jottings to help us calculate answers.
Transient Art
Using the artist Andy Goldsworthy as our inspiration, we created our own transient art – it is simply art without glue! Non-permanent art that is process orientated with no expectations. It can be small-scale or large-scale and individual or collaborative.
Using natural gatherings (leaves, twigs, stones etc.), we made our own Andy Goldsworthy inspired artwork as part of our Enjoying the Outdoors session on Thursday morning. Please go to our gallery section to see some of our transient art creations.
