Year 2 Friday Blog- 17.1.25
Date: 5th Jan 2025 @ 4:58pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 2 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 23rd January (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling/times tables overview for Spring Term 1). Children learn spellings of words through use of a variety of strategies. Your child might prefer to write them down, say them aloud to an adult or use a combination of methods.

Times tables - Times tables are a vital skill. On January 23rd , the children will be tested on the 2x tables (in a random order).
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
Handwriting Homework
To help support your child’s learning, I would like all of the children to use the letter chart below to write given sentences at home.
Unscramble the following sentences. They contain common exception words. Write the words in the correct order to make a sentence.
Our learning this week in Year 2
English
As part of our Paddington topic in English, we have been composing sentences using the conjunctions when, before and after. We have been recapping the rules as to when to use commas in sentences containing conjunctions.
We have also been using our inference skills to work out how the characters are feeling and what they might be thinking.
Maths
In our maths lessons this week, we have been choosing and using the equipment needed to measure mass and volume . We have also been ordering the value of three measurements of mass and three measuremnets of volume. At the end of the week, we used applied our knowledge and skills to work out the answers to given problems relating to mass and volume.
Art
Having researched the background life of Vincent Van Gogh in our previous art lesson, the children have worked hard this week to create the swirl effect seen above. Various materials were used, including chalk, oil pastels, wax crayons and coloured pencils.
Have a look at our gallery to see some of the photographs taken during our art lesson this week.
Have a fantastic weekend!
