Year 2 Friday Blog- 22.11.24
Date: 19th Nov 2024 @ 5:57pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 2 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 28th November (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling/times tables overview for Autumn Term 2). Children learn spellings of words through use of a variety of strategies. Your child might prefer to write them down, say them aloud to an adult or use a combination of methods.
Times tables - Times tables are a vital skill. On November 28th the children will be tested on the 2x tables (in a random order).
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
Handwriting Homework
We have been busy practising the formation of cursive letters in class since September. To help support your child’s learning, I would like all of the children to use the letter chart below to write given sentences at home.
Please see the jumbled sentences below. To enable each child to concentrate solely on their handwriting, I would like them to unjumble the following sentences and write them out. These are not to be handed in. It would be greatly beneficial to your child if you could celebrate their handwriting achievements with them. Thank you in advance.
Remember to use capital letters and full stops.
- astronauts went the moon to the
- peake is tim astronaut an
- take launch-pads rockets from off
- Bob the craters for aliens before checks he goes home deep, dusty
- Bob the astronauts sweet when the clears away have left packets
Our learning this week in Year 2
English
In English this week, we have been collecting new vocabulary from our text entitled Man on the Moon. We have matched given definitions to the vocabulary and used the words to construct our own sentences related to the text. We have also been learning how to use conjunctions in our sentences.
Example:
We went out to play when we had finished our work.
When we had finished our work, we went out to play.
Maths
We have been learning about fractions in our maths lessons this week. We have looked at halving, equal parts, quarter of a set and have focused on the fact that 2/4 is equivalent to ½. Please have a look at www.topmarks.co.uk - HIT THE BUTTON to consolidate learning of halving.
History
Following on from our fascinating Wonderdome session in the hall last week, we have been learning about Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake in our History lesson this week. We looked at a variety of facts and made comparisons between the two astronauts. Using a Venn Diagram to record our findings, we then discussed any similarities and differences between the two astronauts.
Have a look at our gallery to see some of the photographs taken in our History sessions.
School Council Elections
Well done to all of the children who read their speeches out to the class outlining why they would like to be considered as a class representative. Voting took place in our polling station and we all enjoyed posting our votes in the ballot box.The results will be shared with the children on Monday 25th November.
Have a fantastic weekend!
