Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 2 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below. Log in details for Spelling Frame or TT Rock Stars can be found on the inside cover of your child's Reading Record book.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.

Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 12th December (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling/times tables overview for Autumn Term 2). Children learn spellings of words through use of a variety of strategies. Your child might prefer to write them down, say them aloud to an adult or use a combination of methods.

Times tables - Times tables are a vital skill. On December 12th, the children will be tested on the 2x tables (in a random order).

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

Handwriting Homework

To help support your child’s learning, I would like all of the children to use the letter chart below to write given sentences at home.

Please see the jumbled sentences below. To enable each child to concentrate solely on their handwriting, I would like them to unjumble the following sentences and write them out. These are not to be handed in. It would be greatly beneficial to your child if you could celebrate their handwriting achievements with them. Thank you in advance.

Remember to use capital letters and full stops.

English

This week in English, we have been using our plans from last week to help us create a persuasive poster. Having sorted a set of statements into two cateogories (what we would and would not use in our poster), we then went on to expand given sentences for our poster using a variety of conjunctions. Next week, we will produce our posters using the information we have collected during the planning stage.

Maths

In our maths lessons this week, we have been learning about adding amounts without bridging (for example 23p+34p), as well as adding amounts with bridging (such as £26+£15). We have used coins and base 10 equipment to support our learning. We have also been learning how to tell the time, focusing on o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past the hour.

Science

As part of our science topic on everyday materials, we have been investigating which material would be the most effective to use to make a coat for a snowman. Posing the question which material will stop the snowman from melting? we tested paper, tin foil, wool, felt and card. We worked together as a class to plan our investigation and then made our own predictions. Using water that had been frozen in a bottle, the children made a coat around the bottles using the materials outlined. We measured the amount of water in each bottle to find the most suitable material to use to stop the snowman from melting.

The Twinkly Nativity

A massive thank you to all of the infants for all of their hard work with the Twinkly Nativity Play. They all performed so well on Thursday. Well done!
