Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 2 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below. Log in details for Spelling Frame or TT Rock Stars can be found on the inside cover of your child's Reading Record book.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week (from Tuesday 10th September). Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.

Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 12th September (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling overview for Autumn Term 1).

Times tables -  Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. We will focus on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 2. Weekly times tables quizzes will not be given in Autumn Term 1.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

An overview for spellings can be found at the bottom of the blog. Times Tables will be added in future terms.

Our learning this week in Year 2

The children have all been amazing this week and have settled into Year 2 with relative ease. We started the week off by focusing on growth mindset activities. We talked about the power of yet (e.g. I can't ride a bike...yet). We also made our own little books based on the book Neon Leon. The children designed their very own chameleons based on the main character which are now proudly displayed in the classroom.

English

This week, the children have been writing some super sentences when retelling the story of the Three Little Pigs. This will lead on to the introduction of our class text, entitled The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. We have been focusing on using capital letters, full stops, as well as conjuctions (and, because etc.).

 Maths

We have been focusing on number and place value in maths this week. Having completed activities on place value to 50, we then moved on to place value to 100. As well as representing numbers using the base 10 equipment, we also looked at various other ways to represent a number.

Science

In our Science session this week, the children all enjoyed being introduced to the topic entitled Animals, Including Humans. We looked at pictures of various animals and matched the pictures to those of their offspring. This generated a lot of valuable discussion between the children in their groups.

We also discussed what we already knew from previous lessons in EYFS and Y1.

P.E.

Year 2 P.E. lessons will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. P.E. kits are to be worn to school on Tuesdays and a full P.E. kit will need to be in school for the lesson each Friday. No earrings are to be worn to school on P.E. days for safety reasons.

Harvest Celebrations
On Thursday 12th September, we will be walking to church after registration. Children can bring in a donation of non-perishable food to place on the altar (they must be able to carry them). These items will be taken to Chorley foodbank. Thank you in advance.

Courageous Advocacy Reminder
Courageous Advocacy
Calling all 'Agents of Change!'

As you may be aware from blogs posted during the summer term, we are very excited to be introducing Courageous Advocacy into our curriculum. This supports the ethos and values of our school and the work we already do in learning about people from different backgrounds and environments. However, it is not just about fundraising but projects that can bring about change.

What Is Courageous Advocacy?
The act of speaking out against an issue of injustice, often on behalf of someone who cannot be heard.
Must be informed about an issue and move beyond knowing to saying and doing.
It takes courage!

Over the summer holidays, we asked the children to start thinking about what they are passionate about and what we could do as a project in school.

Next week, our class worship will be used to share and discuss these ideas that then can be presented to the rest of the school.

Please remind your child to bring in their thoughts/ideas for next week's class worship on Tuesday.

Have a look at our gallery to see some of the photographs taken throughout the first week in Year 2.

Have a fantastic weekend!
