Year 2 Friday Blog- 8.11.24
Date: 1st Nov 2024 @ 4:56pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 2 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 14th November (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling/times tables overview for Autumn Term 2). Children learn spellings of words through use of a variety of strategies. Your child might prefer to write them down, say them aloud to an adult or use a combination of methods.

Times tables - Please note that our first times tables quiz will be on Thursday 14th November (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling / times tables overview for Autumn Term 2). The children will be tested on the 2x tables (in order). Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the 2 times tables.
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
A message from TT Rockstars

Our learning this week in Year 2
English
This week in English, we have been analysing the poem 'Scissors' by Allan Ahlberg. The children have been very excited about starting our poetry topic. They all made some super predictions as to what they thought the poem would be about and then went on to innovate the poem, replacing scissors with various classroom items, such as base ten equipment, rubbers, pencils etc.
Maths
In maths lessons this week, we have been thinking about multiplication and arrays, focusing on equal groups of objects. We have also been learning about patterns and sequences. The unit of work on statistics has also been introduced and we will continue to work on this next week.
PE
We have been focusing on fundamental movement with gymnastics during our PE sessions this week. Using the theme of Jack and the Beanstalk, the children have been thinking about 'crab and cow walks' to move around the hall in different ways. They have also been thinking about overarm throwing and how to throw with increased accuracy.
Have a look at our gallery to see some of the photographs taken in our PE sessions.
Next Week
Odd Socks Day
Odd Socks Day marks the start of Anti-Bullying Week. Odd Socks Day 2024 is taking place on Tuesday 12th November. It is supported by CBeebies presenter & ABA patron Andy Day and his band 'Andy and the Odd Socks'.
The Andy and the Odd Socks team came up with the idea for Odd Socks Day with us in 2017, and we work together every year to deliver the all inclusive message the event encourages.
Most importantly, Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique!
There is no pressure to wear the latest fashion or to buy expensive costumes. All you have to do to take part is wear odd socks to your school, at work of at home, it couldn’t be simpler! Odd Socks day will take place on the first day of Anti-Bullying Week each year to help raise awareness of bullying. We would like to invite participating schools and workplaces to ask participants to make a £1 donation - or any donation you think appropriate - to support us in continuing to coordinate the week every year.
Children In Need
Next Friday 15th November, we will support Children in Need by having a sporty day inspired by the Gladiators! Children to come to school in sporty clothes on Friday to take part in an obstacle course using the large apparatus in the school hall. (Please note children to wear school uniform on Tuesday and sporty clothes on Friday). We will also watch the Children in Need live stream for schools in the morning after assembly. A £1 donation is suggested and we will send all donations to this special charity.
Have a fantastic weekend!
