Year 2 Friday Blog-13.9.24
Date: 10th Sep 2024 @ 7:44pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 2 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 19th September (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling overview for Autumn Term 1). Children learn spellings of words through use of a variety of strategies. Your child might prefer to write them down, say them aloud to an adult or use a combination of methods.

Times tables - Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. We will focus on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 2. Weekly times tables quizzes will not be given in Autumn Term 1.
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
An overview for spellings can be found at the bottom of the blog. Times Tables will be added in future terms.
Our learning this week in Year 2
The children have impressed me all week with their super behaviour and fantastic attitude towards their learning. We have been been working together as team and I have seen so many excellent role models. We have thought about how to help others as part of our courageous advocacy journey and the children came up with some very interesting ideas. These will be shared with the School Council at the next meeting.
English
This week, the children were all extremely excited to listen to The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. At the beginning of the week, we made predictions by studying the front cover, focusing on the title and illustrations. The children then went on to enjoy our hot-seating activities, taking on the role of the wolf or the third little pig. This helped us to think about how the characters were feeling, as well as what they might have been thinking or saying. I was very impressed with their inference skills.
Maths
We have continued to focus on number and place value in maths this week. The children have been learning how to exchange ones for tens and tens for ones. We have also looked at how to represent numbers in a variety of different ways. We have used jottings, bundles of straws and individual straws, as well as place value tens and ones counters.
Art
In our Art lesson this week, we have been studying paintings by the artist Kandinsky. We looked at two paintings and then went on to create our own pictures in the style of Kandinsky, using lines and shape.
P.E. Reminder
Year 2 P.E. lessons will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. P.E. kits are to be worn to school on Tuesdays and a full P.E. kit will need to be in school for the lesson each Friday. No earrings are to be worn to school on P.E. days for safety reasons.
Have a look at our gallery to see some of the photographs taken throughout the week in Year 2.
Have a fantastic weekend!
