Year 2 Friday Blog- 4.10.24
Date: 29th Sep 2024 @ 5:31pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 2 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 10th October (see the files section on our Year 2 class page for the spelling overview for Autumn Term 1). Children learn spellings of words through use of a variety of strategies. Your child might prefer to write them down, say them aloud to an adult or use a combination of methods.

Times tables - Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. We will focus on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 2. Weekly times tables quizzes will not be given in Autumn Term 1.
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
An overview for spellings can be found at the bottom of the blog. Times Tables will be added in future terms.
Our learning this week in Year 2
English
We have all been very excited about having a new text to read and study this week. Peter Rabbit was introduced to the children during the week, having initially built up the suspense by looking at a variety of pictures related to the text. The children enjoyed being given the opportunity to be detectives and look at the clues with a magnifying glass. Throughout the week, we have also collected new vocabulary and matched definition cards to the vocabulary introduced. On National Poetry Day on Thursday, we studied poems by Matt Goodfellow and produced some pattern poems of our own, using the line WHAT A MISCHIEVOUS RABBIT!
Maths
In maths lessons this week, we have been solving missing number problems, as well as adding and subtracting multiples of 10 to or from a 2- digit number. We have also been deriving facts and reasoning about number bonds to 10.
Design Technology
We have been thinking about healthy eating and have been designing our very own fruit kebabs. Firstly, we researched other fruit kebabs and suggested what we liked or disliked about them. We then went on to design a kebab that followed a repeating pattern. Discussions centred upon how to prepare an area to make it clean and safe to make the kebabs. We also discussed how we will safely cut the fruit to the size required using a knife (with adult support).
A message from TT Rockstars
If using the website at home, please visit play.ttrockstars.com/reset to load the latest version in your device's browser. Otherwise, please update the Times Tables Rock Stars app from the app store. Thank you in advance.
Wellbeing Week
We are all looking forward to Wellbeing Week (7.10.24 - 11.10.24). Please send your child in sporty clothing next Wednesday (rather than Tuesday). Children are invited to wear yellow clothing / accessories to school next Thursday to support the Young Minds charity. A donation of £1 would be greatly welcomed if you choose to donate. Thank you.
PTFA
A big thank you to our valued PTFA for helping raise funds for so many of our wonderful 'wow' events, resources and school trips. If you would like to join our amazing PTFA team, your help and support would be greatly appreciated. New members would enable the PTFA to continue to run and provide invaluable resources for all of our children.
