Year 3 Friday Blog - 07/03/25

Date: 6th Mar 2025 @ 4:21pm

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 3 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.

Germany

Each half term we will be learning about a different country. You will find a new fact about that country on our blog each week. This half term, we are learning about Germany.

This week, we have found out that the capital of Germany is Berlin. We have found Berlin on a map and had a look at some photographs of it.

What can you work out about Berlin from this photograph?

Science Week

This week has been science week in school and we have had lots of fun completing science related activities. Throughout the week, we have been working in different groups to learn new things and complete challenges. On Tuesday, we watched an amazing science show all about electricity.

World Book Day

We celebrated world book day this week by bringing in a book from home and sharing it with children from our class and other classes. You will find pictures of our shared reading time on our class gallery this week.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Remember to ask questions as this will improve key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. Children should also have their school reading books in school every day so that an adult can read with them.

Spellings - For our spelling quizzes this half term, there will be a list of 12 words sent home to learn. These words will all follow a spelling rule that we are learning in class that week. Our spelling quiz each Thursday will then consist of 8 of these words as well as 2 words the children have previously learned. As homework, each child should still log into SpellingFrame and complete this weeks test using the link below.

Times tables - Times tables are a vital skill, which will be used throughout the year and through the rest of the childrens school journeys and lives. In order to prepare every child as well as we can, we ask that children log in to times table rockstars as many days as possible each week. On there, the children can practise all of their times tables by playing different games.

We will also have a times tables quiz each week. Next week, we will test the 8 times table.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes on both, as many nights as possible. If you are struggling to find time to log in to SpellingFrame or TT Rockstars on a device, please find alternative ways of practising our weekly spellings and times tables, such as verbal tests/chanting in the car, or using one of the attached spelling strategies.

An overview for spellings and times tables can be found at the bottom of the blog.

Our learning this week in Year 3

English

This week in English, we have carried on reading The Iron Man. We have created and described our own robots, using descriptions of the iron man to help us. We have also composed our own complex sentences about things the iron man has done.

Maths

This week, we have been working on column addition and column subtraction. Before answering a question, we have been estimating the answer by rounding our numbers to the nearest ten. We have then been using the column method to find out the answer, and finally, checking our answer using the inverse function.

Here is one of the questions we have answered.

RE

In RE, we have continued learning about the Easter story.

Our big question this half term is 'Is the cross a symbol of sadness or joy?'

This week, we focused on Jesus arriving in Jerusalem on a donkey. We wrote diary entries about how we would have felt if we were in the crowd as Jesus arrived.

Computing

In comnputing this week, we have learned all about emails. During our lesson, we replied to an email we had recieved and had a go at composing a new email to someone in the class.

Have a look at our gallery to see what we got up to on world book day.

Have a fantastic weekend!
