Year 3 Friday Blog - 11th October 2024

Date: 9th Oct 2024 @ 4:12pm

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 3 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.

Hello Yellow

On World Mental Health Day, we wore yellow clothing and accessories to school, along with thousands of others across the UK. Thank you for helping us raise money for the Young Minds charity, showing young people that they’re not alone with their mental health.

We stand brighter, together.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Remember to ask questions as this will improve key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. Children should also have their school reading books in school every day so that an adult can read with them.

Spellings - This week, we will be looking at the first ten Year 3 and 4 Statutory Spellings in our spelling lessons. Our spelling words to learn are listed below and these will be tested on Thursday. As homework, each child should log into SpellingFrame and complete this weeks test using the link below.

Times tables - Times tables are a vital skill, which will be used throughout the year and through the rest of the childrens school journeys and lives. In order to prepare every child as well as we can, we ask that children log in to times table rockstars as many days as possible each week. On there, the children can practise all of their times tables by playing different games.

We will also have a times tables quiz each week. Next week, we will test the 5 times table in a random order.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes on both, as many nights as possible. If you are struggling to find time to log in to SpellingFrame or TT Rockstars on a device, please find alternative ways of practising our weekly spellings and times tables, such as verbal tests/chanting in the car, or using one of the attached spelling strategies.

An overview for spellings and times tables can be found at the bottom of the blog.

Times Tables Rock Stars Update

Some children have been struggling to log into times tables rock stars at home. We believe this may be due to them using an out of date version of the website. If you have this issue at home, please  visit play.ttrockstars.com/reset to load the latest version in your device's browser. Otherwise, please update the Times Tables Rock Stars app from the app store.

Our learning this week in Year 3

English

In English, we have continued with our work on persuasive writing and have been planning a persuasive letter to stop deforestation. Each child has written their own letter with points they have chosen to explain why deforestation should be stopped.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning how to use the column method for addition. We started with base 10 equipment and have moved on to adding numbers with hundreds, tens and ones using the column method.

DT

This week, we have completed our first DT project of the year; making sandwiches! On Wednesday afternoon, each child planned what ingredients they wanted to use on their sandwich using the eat well plate to make sure their sandwich was balanced. We then made our sandwiches on Thursday afternoon and evaluated them by saying what we were happy with and what we might change if we made them again.

Wellbeing Week

We have had a very busy week in school this week as we have all been taking part in many different wellbeing activities. We started with yoga on Monday morning, before completing  carousel of activities on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. We then had the climbing frame and other equipment out for our PE lesson on Wednesday and we did some orienteering on Thursday morning.

Have a look at our gallery to see what we have been up to during our wellbeing week.

Have a fantastic weekend!
