Year 3 Friday Blog- 28th June 2024

Date: 24th Jun 2024 @ 9:20pm

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 3 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame or your homework book can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below. Please ask if your child requires a reminder of their log in details for Spelling Frame or TT Rock Stars.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame. Red homework books do not need to be returned to school.

Times table / Division facts - This week, the children need to focus on the related division facts for the 8 times tables. Please continue to practise the 2,3,4,5,8 and 10 times tables, as well as the related division facts, on TT Rock Stars.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

An overview for spellings and times tables can be found at the bottom of the blog.

Wellbeing Homework

Please see the wellbeing homework for your child at the bottom of the class blog (in the files to download section). If time is limited, perhaps choose one or two items throughout the week to focus on.

Our learning this week in Year 3

English

In English this week, we have been focusing on complex sentences when writing our own settings for Cliffhanger. Complex sentences are easy to spot as they often use subordinating conjunctions like because, since, or until to connect clauses.  We all loved singing the conjunctions song in our grammar session. Please click on the conjunctions link to watch the song and to learn more about conjunctions.

 Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning about angles. We followed a set of instructions to make various shapes with a certain number of right angles,as well as angles that were greater or less than right angles. We made the shapes with our maths partners using geoboards. We then drew the shapes on isometric paper.

We have also been learning about decimal place value. We have focused on fractional and decimal tenths.

RE

“Wisdom is more valuable than jewels; nothing you could want can compare with it.”

Proverbs 3:15

We worked with our talk partners to discuss what this proverb might say if it had been written in the modern world.

Some of our ideas:

Wisdom is more valuable than an X-Box.

Wisdom is more valuable than a mobile phone.

Wisdom is more valuable than loom-band bracelets.

We also looked at proverbs from other cultures and worked out their meaning

Kath from Euxton library came to school this week to tell the children about the Summer reading challenge. The challenge is for children to read five books during the summer, and complete a number of challenges. By completing these challenges they'll unlock prizes along the way as well as the chance to be entered into a prize draw for a free Lego kit. All participating children will be able to visit one of Lancashire's museums for free with an adult, as well as regular activities taking place in all libraries in Lancashire. The challenge will launch on Saturday 6th July and runs until the end of September. Please go to see Kath at Euxton library if you would like to register and take part.

Sports Day

Sports Day is next Tuesday 2nd July:
1:15pm Reception, Year 1 and Year 2
2:15pm Years 3-6
Children can come to school ready for sports day in their team sporty clothes (a team coloured t-shirt: Air- Yellow, Earth – Green, Fire – Red, Water – Blue, black shorts and trainers). Please also ensure children have a water bottle and that sun cream is applied before they come to school.  Our PTFA are running a tuck shop and refreshments from 2pm.

Children are able to leave with parents after they have finished their races: if you would like to pick your child up, please do so by going round to the playground and collecting them from their classroom door.
Please could we ask that you don’t encourage younger siblings to play on St Mary’s outside play equipment during our Sports Day – thank you!

If we have to cancel due to bad weather, we will text all parents on the day as early as possible.  Our reserve Sports Day in this case would be Wednesday 10th July. We look forward to having you with us!

Transition Morning

We are  looking forward to 'moving up' morning on Wednesday 3rd July. Your child will spend a morning in their new classroom with their new teachers and the support staff who will be working with the children from September. We all have lots of exciting activities planned.
