Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 3 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading books, coloured book marks and reading records. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame. Red homework books do not need to be returned to school.

Times table / Division facts - This week the children need to focus on the 3 and 4 times tables. Please continue to practise the 2,3,4,5,8 and 10 times tables, as well as the related division facts, on TT Rock Stars.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

An overview for spellings and times tables can be found at the bottom of the blog.

Our learning this week in Year 3

English

We have revisited expanded noun phrases (such as the beautiful, blue lake) as part of our Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar sessions this week. The children have used their knowledge to collect a list of expanded noun phrases from various mystery narrative accounts, focusing on the settings. We then used our collection to write our own descriptions of a setting, thinking about what we could hear, see, touch, taste and smell. Our new class text will be revealed to the children next week.

Maths

This week, we have been continuing to work on subtraction in our daily maths lessons. The focus has been on subtracting by bridging through 10 or 100, as well as subtracting by counting on to find the difference. We have also been learning about how to choose appropriate strategies for a calculation.

History

We have all been very excited about starting our new history topic this week on the Egyptians. The children loved looking at a map of Ancient Egypt and used their enquiry skills to work out why the Ancient Egyptians settled near the banks of the River Nile. All of us (including the Year 3 team) are very eager to find out more facts and study artefacts related to Ancient Egypt at Bolton Museum on June 18th.

Have a look at our gallery to see what we have been doing in science this week.

Have a fantastic weekend!
