Year 3 Friday Blog - 8th November 2024
Date: 8th Nov 2024 @ 2:24pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 3 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.
Children in Need
Odd Socks Day
Odd Socks Day marks the start of Anti-Bullying Week. Odd Socks Day 2024 is taking place on Tuesday 12th November. It is supported by CBeebies presenter & ABA patron Andy Day and his band 'Andy and the Odd Socks'.
The Andy and the Odd Socks team came up with the idea for Odd Socks Day with us in 2017, and we work together every year to deliver the all inclusive message the event encourages.
Most importantly, Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique!
There is no pressure to wear the latest fashion or to buy expensive costumes. All you have to do to take part is wear odd socks to your school, at work of at home, it couldn’t be simpler! Odd Socks day will take place on the first day of Anti-Bullying Week each year to help raise awareness of bullying. We would like to invite participating schools and workplaces to ask participants to make a £1 donation - or any donation you think appropriate - to support us in continuing to coordinate the week every year.
School Council Elections
Friday 22nd November will be our school council elections in school as part of parliament week. Any children who wish to run should give their name to their teacher on Monday 18th November, so that ballot papers can be prepared. They will then give a speech to their class on Friday 22nd November about why they would like to be considered as a class representative. Voting will take place on the Friday morning and the children with the most votes will be presented with their badges in worship the following week. Please note there will be no celebration worship on Friday 22nd November as the hall will be set up as a polling station.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Remember to ask questions as this will improve key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. Children should also have their school reading books in school every day so that an adult can read with them.
Spellings - This week, we will be looking at plurals in our spelling lessons. Our spelling words to learn are listed below and these will be tested on Thursday. As homework, each child should log into SpellingFrame and complete this weeks test using the link below.
Times tables - Times tables are a vital skill, which will be used throughout the year and through the rest of the childrens school journeys and lives. In order to prepare every child as well as we can, we ask that children log in to times table rockstars as many days as possible each week. On there, the children can practise all of their times tables by playing different games.
We will also have a times tables quiz each week. Next week, we will test division facts related to the 10 times table.
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes on both, as many nights as possible. If you are struggling to find time to log in to SpellingFrame or TT Rockstars on a device, please find alternative ways of practising our weekly spellings and times tables, such as verbal tests/chanting in the car, or using one of the attached spelling strategies.
An overview for spellings and times tables can be found at the bottom of the blog.
Our learning this week in Year 3
English
This week in English, we have started to read a folk tale called the Lancashire giant. We started the week by imagining what the character would be able to see and describing this with noun phrases. We then created a story map to help us remember the key events in the folk tale, and used this to act out those events.
Maths
In maths this week, we have continued our work on times tables and used our times tables facts to help us to solve problems such as finding missing numbers in sequences and grouping numbers.
Science
In science, we have started a new unit all about light. We completed an experiment this week, in which we looked into a box with some light, n light and lots of light, to find out what happened to what we could see when the amount of light increased and decreased.
