Year 4 Friday Blog - 28th June 2024

Date: 27th Jun 2024 @ 4:22pm

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 4 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.

Sports Day

Sports Day is next Tuesday 2nd July:
1:15pm Reception, Year 1 and Year 2
2:15pm Years 3-6

Children can come to school ready for sports day in their team sporty clothes (a team coloured t-shirt: Air- Yellow, Earth – Green, Fire – Red, Water – Blue, black shorts and trainers). Please also ensure children have a water bottle and that sun cream is applied before they come to school.  Our PTFA are running a tuck shop and refreshments from 2pm.
Children are able to leave with parents after they have finished their races: if you would like to pick your child up, please do so by going round to the playground and collecting them from their classroom door.
Please could we ask that you don’t encourage younger siblings to play on St Mary’s outside play equipment during our Sports Day – thank you!
If we have to cancel due to bad weather, we will text all parents on the day as early as possible.  Our reserve Sports Day in this case would be Wednesday 10th July. We look forward to having you with us!

Move up morning

On Wednesday next week (3rd July), all children will be spending the morning in their new classrooms with their new teachers! I know Mrs Oral is really looking forward to getting to know the children and I am sure they will have a lovely time in Year 5. Children will come to their current classrooms when they are dropped off and everyone will move up together after worship, returning to Year 4 before lunch.

Summer library challenge

Kath from Euxton library came to school this week to tell the children about the Summer reading challenge. The challenge is for children to read five books during the summer, and complete a number of challenges. By completing these challenges they'll unlock prizes along the way as well as the chance to be entered into a prize draw for a free Lego kit. All participating children will be able to visit one of Lancashire's museums for free with an adult, as well as regular activities taking place in all libraries in Lancashire. The challenge will launch on Saturday 6th July and runs until the end of September. Please go to see Kath at Euxton library if you would like to register and take part.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Remember to ask questions as this will improve key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Spellings - This week, we will be doing some dictionary work in our spelling lessons. Our spelling words to learn are listed below and these will be tested on Thursday. As homework, each child should log into SpellingFrame and complete this weeks test using the link below. Homework books can be used to practise spellings, but do not need to be returned to school.

Times tables - All children have now completed their MTC and we are so proud of how much they have all practised to earn their scores. As we come to the end of Year 4, we begin to look ahed to Year 5 and 6, where children will need to retain their times table knowledge and apply it in their maths. For this reason, we ask that every child continues to log in to TT RockStars each week. On Friday, we will continue with our weekly times table tests and this week we will be testing the 12 times table.

Wellbeing Homework - Please see the wellbeing homework for your child at the bottom of the class blog (in the files to download section). If time is limited, perhaps choose one or two items throughout the week to focus on.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes on both, as many nights as possible.

An overview for spellings and times tables can be found at the bottom of the blog.

Our learning this week in Year 4

English

This week, children have planned out a new journey for the characters from our story to complete and we have started writing about these. Everyone has been working hard to include our focus grammar skills in their writing as well as describing the setting of their journey.

Maths

This week, we have been looking at written methods for multiplication and division in maths. Everybody worked hard using grid method to solve some multiplication problems earlier in the week, and we have now moved on to solving division problems with the chunking method.

Science and PSHE

This week in our Science topic (Animals including humans), we have been looking at why humans need food and which types of food we need more and less of. Our PSHE topic is staying healthy and we have been learning about hat we need to eat to stay healthy in these lessons as well. To help with their understanding of both topics, the children designed their own healthy eating plates this week.

Have a fantastic weekend!
