Date: 18th Sep 2024 @ 8:43am
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 5 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 19th September and our times tables quiz will be on Friday 20th September.
|
Times tables - Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. We will be revising all times tables in year 5 and further developing related division facts. Times tables test will take place each Friday.
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
Our learning this week in Year 5
The children have all continued to be enthusiastic in their learning this week.
PE
We have continued with our PE units and the children have been building on skills covered last week. As we had lovely weather on Tuesday we managed to take oour lesson outside. In cricket we have been working on bowling underarm effectively and progressed to working on the skills needed bowl overarm through targets.
English
This week, the children have continued to find out more about the characters in our focus novel The lion the witch and the wardrobe. We have continued to read on and have met the White Witch who the chidren thought sounded very mean and strict. The chidren have compared the characters of Lucy and Mr Tumnus and analysed excerpts of the text discussing why the author's choice of language is significant.
Maths
This week, we have completed the place value unit by describing and extending number sequences where step sizes were in decimals. We have made a start on the addition and subtraction unit which builds on place value by working on mental partitioning. The children have made a great start to this learning.
Science
In our Science session this week, the children have undertaken an investigation to find the most suitable material for a new lunchbag lining. They used their secondary source research from last week to find to help them explain their findings .
History
In history this week, we have looked at the importance and influence of the Greek Gods on the life of the Ancient Greek civilisation. The children researched a variety of gods and goddesses to create profiles about them.
What a busy week!
Have a fantastic weekend!
