Year 5 Friday Blog - 06.09.24

Date: 5th Sep 2024 @ 12:51pm

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 5 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Please note that reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.

Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 12th September .

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

An overview for spellings can be found at the bottom of the blog. Times Tables will be added in future terms.

Our learning this week in Year 5

The children have all been amazing this week and have settled into Year 5. We started the week off by focusing on growth mindset activities. We talked about the the classroom routines and expectations. The children have also shared what they have been doing over the summer break writing this in the form of a recount.

English

This week, the children have been discussing what it might have been like to be a child evacuee in WW2 as our novel is set during this time. The children then used some key vocabulary and points from the class discussion to write diary entries from the point of view of one of the characters from the novel.

 Maths

We have been focusing on place value in maths this week. Having completed activities to identify, represent and partition five and six-digit numbers, we then moved on to place value to 100. As well as representing numbers using the base 10 equipment, we also looked at various other ways to represent a number.

Science

In our Science session this week, the children were introduced to the new topic entitled Properties and changes of materials. We looked at and handled various materials before testing them. This generated a lot of valuable discussion between the children where they were able to use new key vocabulry effectively.

We also discussed what we already know from previous learning relating it to our new topic.

Harvest Celebrations
On Thursday 12th September, we will be walking to church after registration. Children can bring in a donation of non-perishable food to place on the alter (they must be able to carry them). These items will be taken to Chorley foodbank. Thank you in advance.

Courageous Advocacy Reminder
Courageous Advocacy
Calling all 'Agents of Change!'

As you may be aware from blogs posted during the summer term, we are very excited to be introducing Courageous Advocacy into our curriculum. This supports the ethos and values of our school and the work we already do in learning about people from different backgrounds and environments. However, it is not just about fundraising but projects that can effect change.

What Is Courageous Advocacy?
The act of speaking out against an issue of injustice, often on behalf of someone who cannot be heard.
Must be informed about an issue and move beyond knowing to saying and doing.
It takes courage!

Over the summer holidays, we asked the children to start thinking about what they are passionate about and what we could do as a project in school.

Next week, our class worship will be used to share and discuss these ideas that then can be presented to the rest of the school.

Please remind your child to bring in their thoughts/ideas for next week's class worship on Tuesday.

Have a fantastic weekend!
