Our learning this week in Year 5
English
📚 A Week of Discovery with "The Boy at the Back of the Class" 🌟
This week in English, our classroom has transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity and empathy as we dive into our new novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class. The children have enthusiastically explored new vocabulary from the chapters we've covered, enhancing their writing by discussing synonyms and how to express themselves more effectively. ✍️
The highlight of our week was when the children wrote a heartfelt diary entry centred on the character Ahmet. Initially, they captured what they knew about him, but as they discovered more about his story as a refugee who couldn't understand or speak English, their entries became much more profound. 💖
To help the children truly understand and empathise with Ahmet, I introduced an activity where I spoke to them in Turkish. Although they initially found it challenging to grasp the task due to the language barrier, it sparked meaningful conversations about communication and understanding. They then tried explaining a word to their partner using gestures only, uncovering the difficulties of expression without words—what a fantastic learning experience! 🤝
Take a look at how the children engaged in this activity. Click through to our gallery for some lovely snapshots! 📸
Maths
Returning to Place Value! 🌟
This week in our maths lessons, we are pleased to revisit and deepen our understanding of place value! The children have been hard at work identifying, representing, and partitioning numbers with up to three decimal places. This essential concept is critical as they learn to recognise the significance of each digit, especially in cases where 0 acts as a place holder.
The children have been exploring numbers in various forms – whether using numerals, words, or fractions. They have also gained confidence in comparing and ordering numbers featuring three decimal places. This skill not only enhances their numerical fluency but will also serve them well in real-life situations!
Geography
Exploring New Horizons: Our Geography Unit on Migration 🌍✈️
This week, we're excited to begin our geography unit on migration! 🌟 Understanding migration is not just about borders; it’s about people, communities, and the various reasons that drive individuals to find new homes.
We began our journey with an engaging introduction to what migration really means. The children looked into the different causes that drive people to migrate, from conflicts and environmental factors to the search for better economic opportunities. This week, we placed a particular emphasis on economic migration, discussing how job prospects and living conditions in different countries can influence people's decisions to move.
Additionally, we linked our exploration of migration to our English learning to illustrate the experiences of migrants. By analysing stories and narratives, the children will gain a richer understanding of the emotional and cultural implications of migration.
Through lively discussions and real-world examples, the children opened their minds to the complexities and human stories behind migration.✨
PE
Cricket Sessions! 🏏
This week in PE, the children have been practicing thier catching skills with the first of their lessons with Lancashire Cricket Foundation. They worked on improving hand-eye coordination through various drills and activities it was great to see everyone having fun while developing teamwork and concentration.
