Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 5 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 19th September and our times tables quiz will be on Friday 20th September.
|
Times tables - Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. We will be revising all times tables in year 5 and further developing related division facts. Times tables test will take place each Friday.
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
Our learning this week in Year 5
The children have all continued to be enthusiastic in their learning this week. We have enjoyed starting our PE units and the children have been eager to practice and develop their skills in gymnastics and cricket.
English
This week, the children have continued to find out more about the characters in our focus novel The lion the witch and the wardrobe. The character we focussed on was Mr Tumnus and after reading chapters 1 and 2 the children made predicitions about him based on information that we had been given so far. I have also explained how we can use a dictionary to help us expand our vocabulary for use in our writing.
Maths
We have continued to build our learning on place value in maths this week. Having completed activities to compare and order numbers, identifying and positioning numbers on a numberline and rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1,000. The children also enjoyed playing a game finding ways to make ten thousand.
Science
In our Science session this week, the children were building on their learning from last week. They used secondary source research to find out what thermal conductors and insulators are and gave examples of these, this informed thier predictions for our investigation next week. Durning our discussions the children were able to share the reasons for thier predictions using the focus key vocabulary.
Have a fantastic weekend!
