Dear parents

WELCOME TO THE YEAR 5 BLOG GIF.gif

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below.

Reedley Primary School: Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Spellings -  Please find this weeks spellings below, our spelling quiz when we return will take place on Thursday 27th February. Every Thursday, we will have a spelling quiz. Exploring Poetry in English Class

This week in English, the children have been busy creating descriptive poems! ✍️✨

We explored similes and how descriptive words can make our writing more powerful. By using vivid language, Year 5 poets are bringing their poems to life! 🌈

We also looked at "The Tyger" by William Blake. We learned how he uses rhyme and sound patterns in his poem, and then we tried to apply these ideas to our own “Tyger-inspired” poems. 🐅🎶

Exploring Angles with Confidence! ✏️📐

This week in maths, the children have dived deeper into the fascinating world of geometry! 🌍 We focused on measuring acute and obtuse angles and calculating reflex angles to the nearset degree.

Utilising our knowledge that a full turn amounts to 360 degrees, the children learned how to subtract acute and obtuse angles to find their reflex counterparts. It’s incredible to see how they applied such reasoning in real-time! 🔍

In addition to calculations, the class engaged in some hands-on drawing. Using protractors, the children positioned them accurately on lines, carefully reading the correct scale. They diligently placed dots to represent angles and connected them with straight lines, ensuring every reflex angle was clearly noted and labelled. Their focus and accuracy were impressive!

The Parable of the Mustard Seed - RE lesson book mark making | Teaching Resources

Learning Through Stories 🌱✝️

This week in RE, the children explored the wonderful stories of Jesus. We read the Parable of the Pearl of Great Price, which teaches us how much God loves us. He would even give up His only Son to be with us. What a powerful message of love! ❤️

Next, we looked at the Parable of the Mustard Seed. Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is like a tiny mustard seed. It starts small but grows into a big tree, showing us how, just like that seed, the community of believers has grown over time from a few followers to millions today. 🌍🌳

The children then drew their own pictures to represent the parable of the mustard seed, thinking about how faith can grow in our lives.

🍞 Celebrating Our Delicious DT Bread Project! 🎉

This week has been absolutely bread-tastic in year 5! Our talented bakers have been busy completing their Design and Technology (DT) projects focused on the wonderful world of bread. 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

The children embarked on an exciting journey of tasting a variety of different types of bread, evaluating each based on smell, texture, appearance, and taste. They converted their findings into a graph, showcasing their favourite types of bread 🍞📊, and it was fascinating to see their preferences unfold!

But we didn't stop there! We had an inspiring discussion about how to adapt a basic bread recipe. The children eagerly brainstormed ideas, suggesting delightful additions such as cheese, chocolate chips, and even banana! 🍌🧀🍫

After much anticipation, we decided to put our ideas into action and bake these delectable adaptations. The school was filled with the most delightful aromas as the bread baked in the oven—just yum! 😋

Curious to see how our budding bakers got on? Check out the gallery for some snapshots of this culinary adventure. 📸

Sports Hall Pentathlon

On Wednesday Year 5 had a fantastic time taking part in the Sports Hall Pentathlon with Chorley Sports Partnership. They showed grat teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the event encouraging each other. Take a look at the gallery for photographs of this event.
