Dear parents
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below, our spelling quiz when we return will take place on Thursday 20th March. Every Thursday, we will have a spelling quiz. The quiz will contain ten words from the spelling rule for that week plus two words from previous year groups. The overview for Spring Term 2 can be found on our class page.

Our learning this week in Year 5
Discovering Greece: Our Half-Term Spotlight 🌍
This half-term, we're excited to learn all about our spotlight country Greece! Each week, we’ll share a fun fact about this amazing country. Children may want to get involved at home. If you find out something interesting about Greece, bring that information into school. 🌊🏛️
This Week in English: Exploring the Depths of "The Explorer" 🌍📚
This week in English, our young adventurers have dived into the world of Katherine Rundell’s novel, The Explorer. 🧭 From deciphering new vocabulary using the dictionary to engaging in thrilling discussions, the children have truly immersed themselves in the text!
We kicked off our sessions with a shared reading of one of the chapters, where the children passionately predicted the identity of the mysterious man who appears in the story. Is he the explorer we’ve been waiting to find out about? The use of textual evidence made every prediction more engaging and grounded in our understanding of the plot! 🤔🔍
In addition to our literary explorations, the children also conducted fascinating research on an Amazonian animal of their choice. Armed with new knowledge, they crafted their very own non-chronological reports. 🦜✨ These reports not only helped to strengthen their writing skills but also enhanced their understanding of the rich biodiversity found in the Amazon rainforest.
Exciting Week of Maths Measurement 📏✨
This week has been an engaging journey into the world of measurement in our Maths lessons! The children have been diving deep into the fascinating units of liquid volume, converting between litres and millilitres using various formats. Here’s a snapshot of what we've explored:
-
Converting Liquid Measurements:
The children have practised converting between litres and millilitres, mastering notations such as:- 1l 500ml = 1,500ml
- 1.5l = 1,500ml
- 1.5l = 1l 500ml
-
Calculating Area:
Its great to see the children calculating the area of rectangles! They tackled mixed units by solving problems like finding the area of a rectangle with a length of 6.4cm and a width of 47mm. This learning builds on their previous units from the Autumn term, reinforcing their mathematical skills. -
Introduction to Solid Volume:
This is the first time the children have been introduced to solid volume. They are discovering that 1ml of liquid occupies the same three-dimensional space as a 1cm³ cube. They’re getting hands-on experience by building shapes with centimetre cubes, gaining a firm grasp of the concept! -
Using the ‘cm³’ Notation:
As they explore solid volume, the children will also begin using the ‘cm³’ notation for representing volumes, linking their theoretical understanding to practical applications. 🌟
RE
This Week in RE: Exploring the Triumph of Christ
This week in our RE learning, the children have been delving into the fascinating world of storytelling, examining the accuracy of storybooks and films depicting significant events. 🌟
As we journey through the Easter narrative, we invite the children to reflect on a profound question: What words best describe Christ’s triumph over death? Through thoughtful investigation, they have explored the themes of bravery, hope, and resurrection. ✝️✨
Reflect and Express Challenge
The children have been encouraged to take on the Reflect and Express Challenge! They are tasked with identifying six key events in the Easter story that showcase Jesus as victorious. They organised their thoughts and then wrote a short paragraph to articulate their choices and the significance of each event.
Whether it's the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, or the Resurrection, each moment carries weight and meaning that can inspire personal reflections and discussions.
