Year 5 - Friday blog 18.10.24

Date: 17th Oct 2024 @ 9:41am

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 5 Friday blog!

Thank you for coming to Parents Evening on Monday. It was fantastic to meet with everyone, some for the first time, and discuss how your child has settled in to Year 5.

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below.

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

Our learning this week in Year 5

English

This week, the children have been planning their adapted version of our focus text The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. They have then written their own adapted story and included lots of elements of writing that we have focussed on this half term such as, using dialogue and descriptive vocabulary.

 Maths

This week, the children have built on last weeks geometry unit by looking at measures of shapes. This involved identifying measuring the lengths of the sides to the nearest  millimetre and adding them up to find the perimeter.

Science

In our Science session this week, the children have explored the solubility of diferent materials in water, making predictions about which ones would dissolve. We discussed the difference between dissolving and melting before carrying out our investigation. Have a look at the gallery to view photographs of our investigation.

Inspire Youth Zone visit.

On Tuesday the children visited the Inspire Youth Zone in Chorley. We had the opportunity to participate in various sesssions aimed at keeping safe. The children completed activities with the school nurse team about dental health; completed wellbeing activities; discussed with the nieghbourhood police officers ways of keeping themselves safe and had discussions with the fire officer about fire safety and the firework code. It was a valuable experience that the children really enjoyed. Take a look at the gallery

We have had an amazing Olympic day today, it was lovely to see the children encouraging each other in their events.
