Date: 21st Nov 2024 @ 4:52pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 5 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be every Thursday and our times tables quiz will be every Friday.
|
Times tables - Please use the Times Tables Rock Stars website to practise the times tables. We will be revising all times tables in year 5 and further developing related division facts. Times tables test will take place each Friday.
I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.
Our learning this week in Year 5
English
In English this week, the children have been working on writing a character portrait by focusing on what they know about Rosemary from the book Time Spinner. They also listened to the story The Fun They Had and compared a modern-day school with a futuristic one, using evidence from the text to support their ideas.
Maths
This week, the children have been focusing on fractions, learning how to identify, name, and write equivalent fractions by using multiplication facts. They have also compared two fractions where one denominator is a multiple of the other and practiced ordering fractions with different denominators. Additionally, they have been working with thousandths, applying their understanding of place value to solve problems with small decimal numbers.
Science
In Science this week, the children have used their learning so far to sort statements into true or false categories. They have also focused on the movement of the moon relative to the Earth, drawing on their experiences from the WonderDome visit last week. To demonstrate their understanding, they wrote an explanation to explain the diagram, showing what they learned about the moon's movement and its relationship to Earth.
School Council elections
As part of parliament week the childrenhave given speeches and voted for thier new Year 5 School Council reprasentatives. The newly elected members will be informed next week. Take a look at the gallery to see photographs
