Dear parents

Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below, our spelling quiz this week will take place on Thursday 30th January. Every Thursday, we will have a spelling quiz. Our learning this week in Year 5
English
Exploring The Boy At the Back of the Class 📖✨
This week in English, the children have been excited to continue our focus novel, The Boy At the Back of the Class. 📚 The children have been writing character profiles and descriptions of the two main characters, diving into their traits and stories. 🕵️♂️✍️
They have also planned and written persuasive letters, which helps them express their opinions clearly and convincingly. 📨💡 It’s been wonderful to see their creativity and engagement with the story!🌟
Maths
📚 This Week in Maths: Exploring Numbers! ✨
This week in maths, the children have been busy learning some exciting new skills:
🔍 Rules of Divisibility: We’ve explored rules that help identify whether a number can be divided evenly.
🌟 Identifying Factors: children worked on finding common factors of two numbers beyond their times tables using a simple list strategy.
⚪ Understanding Prime and Composite Numbers: We learned to distinguish between prime numbers (only divisible by 1 and themselves) and composite numbers (which can be divided by more than two factors).
🧮 Multiplication with the Grid Method: Finally, we practiced multiplying 2 and 3-digit numbers using the grid method, breaking it down into easy steps.
RE
This Week in RE: The Parable of the Good Samaritan 🌟
This week in our RE lessons, the children dove deep into the heart of one of the most powerful teachings in the Bible: the Parable of the Good Samaritan. 🤝✨
Through thoughtful discussions, they tackled some important questions that encourage reflection and understanding:
-
Why did Jesus tell this parable?
To illustrate the importance of kindness and compassion, regardless of societal boundaries. -
What did Jesus want people to learn from this parable?
That true love and help should be extended to everyone, irrespective of their background. -
Does the parable have more than one message? Why?
Absolutely! It challenges us to confront our biases, and invites us to redefine who our 'neighbours' are. -
What behaviour does this parable challenge?
It challenges the tendencies of indifference and prejudice, prompting us to be more proactive in helping those in need. -
If you acted on the message of this parable, what might you do differently in the future?
Perhaps you might volunteer in your local community or reach out to someone who seems lonely or in need. 🌍❤️
As the children reflected on these essential questions, they learned valuable lessons about empathy, social responsibility, and the impact of kindness. These lessons will resonate beyond the classroom and inspire meaningful actions in their daily lives.
French
French This Week 🌍✈️
This week in French, the children have been exploring the verb aimer (to like) and how it can be used in both positive and negative forms. They have linked it to a variety of different foods saying things like j'aime (I like) and je n'aime pas (I don't like). This has given them a chance to not only expand their food vocabulary, but also to practise forming negative sentences. It has been a fun and engaging way for them to use real-life examples and get comfortable with both the grammar and pronunciation. Take a look at the gallery for photos of this activity. 🗺️✨
