Dear parents

WELCOME TO THE YEAR 5 BLOG GIF.gif

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below.

The Explorer 🚀🌳

This week in English, the children have started reading our focus novel The Explorer by Katherine Rundell! 📚✨ They have been predicting what will happen and summarising the characters based on the first few chapters.

Using their inference skills, the children have shared their thoughts about the characters’ ideas and motivations. It’s fantastic to see their enthusiasm for the story!

We also had fun creating a survival list for items we might need if we were stranded in the Amazon rainforest. 🏕️🌿

Mastering Fractions! 🔢✨

This week in maths, we have been on a journey to reinforce our understanding of fractions as we build upon the knowledge we acquired during the Autumn term! 🏫

We started our week by diving into the world of improper fractions and mixed numbers. The children took on the challenge of converting between these two forms, developing a deeper understanding of how they relate to one another. 📐

Next, we focused on identifying, naming, and writing equivalent fractions. This crucial skill not only enhances our ability to handle fractions confidently but also prepares us for more advanced concepts in the future. 🌟

To cap off the week, the children tackled adding fractions and mixed numbers. With practice and perseverance, they learned how to combine these fractions effectively. 🧮

Celebrating Victory! 🌟

This week in RE, we started our new topic on Easter. 🐣 We talked about what victory means and how it feels.

We asked if coming second or last can still be a victory. 🏅 The children thought about their own moments of success, showing that victory can take many forms.

We also looked at inspiring quotes from Nelson Mandela, who said, “I never lose. I either win or learn.” This got us thinking about what it means to live a successful life.

The children shared their stories of victory.

British Science Week 2025

Next week we are going to celebrate British Science Week.  From science shows to STEM activities, we are really looking forward to getting to grips with the world of science. To accommodate this, there will some changes to our timetable. Key stage 2 sporty-clothes day will be on Thursday instead of Tuesday.  We are also kindly requesting that all Key Stage 2 children bring in a 500ml bottle of diet coke (this will not be consumed). Thank you for your support with this.  Don't forget to check the class blogs for lots of pictures next week!
