Dear parents

WELCOME TO THE YEAR 5 BLOG GIF.gif

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below.

Children's Mental Health Week 3-9th February
Next week sees the start of Children's Mental Health Week. The theme for 2025 is 'KNOW YOURSELF, GROW YOURSELF'. We will be thinking about our emotions and about what makes us feel happy, sad etc. Each class will be focusing on this theme and will be completing various related activities.

Our learning this week in Year 5

English

The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Rauf is a great KS2 book to open up

Predictions and Creative Endings! 📚✨

This week, the children have continued reading our focus novel The Boy at the Back of the Class. They have been making predictions about how the characters might find Ahmet's parents.

They are also writing their own endings to the story, using what they’ve learned so far. It's fantastic to see their creativity shine as they think about the themes of friendship and belonging.

 Maths

Multiplication and Division by 100 and 1,000! 📚✨

This week in Maths, the children have been learning how to multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by 100 and 1,000. By using place value, they can see how digits move when we do these calculations!

When we multiply by 100, the digits move two places to the left. For example, 25 becomes 2,500! And when we divide by 1,000, digits move three places left—so 1500 turns into 1.5!

The children have also been converting units of measure, such as millilitres to litres and grams to kilograms.

We even looked at Divide Related Decimal Numbers to help understand how numbers and decimals relate to each other.

RE

The Modern-Day Good Samaritan 🌟

This week in RE, the have continued exploring the parable of the Good Samaritan. They rewrote the story in a modern context and shared their own experiences of kindness.

The children's stories highlighted personal moments when someone acted as a Good Samaritan in their lives—like a friend helping them out or a stranger being kind. These discussions have shown how important empathy and support are in our community. 💖

Art

🎨 Self-Portraits inspired by Leonardo! 🤩

This week in art, the children have been wrapping up their self-portrait unit. They've been inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s hand studies to create their own artworks. ✍️✨

Using flesh-toned pencil crayons and a cross-hatch shading technique, they're producing realistic representations of their hands. It's wonderful to see their progress and creativity! 🖼️

Take a look at the gallery to see the amazing work.

Safeguarding - morning routine

If you are dropping off your child at the classroom door / KS2 entrance door and need to pass a message on to a member of staff please do so by speaking to the staff member who monitors the door in the morning.
If you need to enter school for any other reason, adults can only enter the school building via the main school entrance and seek assistance from the school office team. If you are attending a meeting with a member of staff you must sign in at the front desk as a visitor and have an ID lanyard.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school and children safe

Have a lovely weekend
