Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

Our learning this week in Year 5

                                                                PE

The children have build on their recent learning bowling overarm from a stationary position or a short run up. They have then thought as a batter which is the best position to stand in, which space is best to strike the ball into and how to score the most runs giving reasons for their thinking. They also had to consider being the fielder and how best to cover the space. The children have taken this into a game situation this week which they thoroughly enjoyed.

English

This week, the children have devised their own mythical creatures in order to write an independent non-chronological report. They have explored the use of formal wrting and how to use a backstory that explains the history of their creature. The children also used aspects of descriptive language which helped to bring their creatures to life.

On Thursday we celebrated National Poetry Day where we read and discussed the poem One by James Berry. The children were able to explain that the poem was describing how everyone is unique and how wonderful that is. From this they drew pictures of themselves and explained what made them unique.

 Maths

This week, the children have completed the addition and subtraction unit. We have been using various methods, such as estimating, rounding and bridging then choosing the most efficient one to complete calculations.

Science

In our Science session this week, the children have completed a camparative and fair test through investigating advertising claims about the absorbancy of different types of paper towels. They designed an investigation to ascertain which one was the most absorbant, recording their results and writing a conclusion about their findings.

Computing

This week, the children have been creating a physical concept map based on how we can look after the environment. This shows how we can organise information.
