Year 5 Friday Blog - 6.12.24

Date: 5th Dec 2024 @ 3:28pm

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 5 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Our learning this week in Year 5

English

Unleashing Imagination: 🚀📚

This week in English, the children have dived back into the amazing worlds of ‘Time Spinner’ and ‘The Fun They Had’. After exploring these fab stories, they’ve been inspired to create their very own science-fiction adventures using the story mountain method.

With the story mountain, the children mapped out their plots, from the build-up to the big climax and the satisfying ending. They’re ready to take us on journeys filled with time travel, futuristic classrooms, and so much more!

I can’t wait to see how their imaginative minds incorporate unique twists into their stories.

Be sure to ask your child about their story ideas and maybe even join in on some sci-fi fun together. Storytelling really is a fantastic way to spark creativity and critical thinking!

 Maths

Multiplication and Area Fun!

This week in our Maths, the children have been delving into multiplication and the concept of area!

The children have explored various strategies to tackle multiplication problems, showcasing their problem-solving skills. Key methods included:

  • Compensation: Adjusting numbers to make them easier to work with.
  • Doubling: Using doubling to help with calculations.
  • Partitioning: Breaking down numbers into more manageable parts.
  • Multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000: Understanding place value.
  • Grid Method: A visual approach to understand multiplication thoroughly.

By choosing the most appropriate strategy for each problem, the children are enhancing their mathematical thinking and flexibility. They have also been calculating the area of rectangles. They have compared different rectangles to see which one covers the most space.

Science

Learning About Day and Night! 🌍✨

This week in science, the children have been exploring how the Earth spins to explain day and night! 🌞🌜

Through fun activities, the children have discovered that as the Earth rotates, different parts of it get sunlight, which is why we have daytime and nighttime. They enjoyed using globes to show how this works, making the lesson come alive. I love seeing how excited the children are about science and how they’re learning about the world around them.

Safeguarding - morning routine

If you are dropping off your child at the classroom door/  KS2 entrance door and need to pass a message on to a member of staff please do so by speaking to the staff member who monitors the door in  the morning.
If you need to enter school for any other reason, adults can only enter the school building via the main school entrance and seek assistance from the school office team. If you are attending a meeting with a member of staff you must sign in at the front desk as a visitor and have an ID lanyard.
