Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below, our spelling quiz this week will take place on Thursday 13th February. Every Thursday, we will have a spelling quiz. Our learning this week in Year 5
English
Discovering Blake's "Tyger" π β¨
This week, the children have explored William Blake's famous poem, "Tyger". They annotated the text and evaluated its themes, diving into its meaning.
Through their analysis, the children discussed the vivid imagery and contrasting ideas in the poem. They answered questions that helped them think critically and share their own interpretations. ππ
Maths
Shape Transformations!
This week in Maths, the children have been exploring the exciting world of shapes! β¨
They learned to identify and describe the position of shapes after reflecting them across horizontal and vertical mirror lines. The children engaged with symmetry, discovering how shapes change when flipped. π
They also practised plotting points on a grid using coordinates in the first quadrant. Each child completed given polygons by drawing the sides with accuracy! π¨
Lastly, we tackled translations, moving shapes left/right and up/down. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they transformed shapes in different ways!
RE
Learning About the Beatitudes π
This week in RE, the children have been exploring the Beatitudes—powerful teachings from Jesus about how to live kindly and compassionately. πβ¨
Through discussions, the children have been thinking about what it means to live by these teachings. They’ve been particularly inspired by ideas like being a peacemaker and showing mercy to others. πΌπ
Some of the questions they've considered include:
- How can we show kindness every day?
- What does it mean to stand up for what is right?
- How can we help create peace in our school?
These discussions are important, as they help the children think about how to make the world a better place. ππ«
π± The theme for 2025 has been 'KNOW YOURSELF, GROW YOURSELF'. π±
We were excited to embrace the 2025 theme: 'KNOW YOURSELF, GROW YOURSELF'! This theme encourages us to understand our feelings and develop our skills.
π In class, the children have been thinking about what makes them happy or sad. They’re recognising their strengths, like riding a bike or being a good friend.
π― We also wanted to think about things they'd like to improve. In small groups, they shared their skills and the emotions tied to different activities. How do they feel when they succeed easily? How about when they face challenges? These discussions are important for supporting one another.
β¨ We discussed how to help each other how to figure out how to work on their improvement goals. Who can help them? What do they need? Talking about this inspires them to grow.
Children's Mental Health Week is a perfect opportunity to reflect on the importance of mental wellness in our youngest minds. π§ π In our discussions, we have explored simple yet effective breathing techniques that can help the children find calm and balance in their busy lives.
Breathing exercises are not just for adults; they can be a fun and engaging way for children to learn to manage their emotions and anxiety. Here is one technique we have shared.
Eight Breath
Place your finger on the star.
Take a deep breath in and trace the first circle.
When you reach the star, breathe out and trace the other circle.
Repeat eight times.
