Year 5 - Friday Blog 15.11.24

Date: 6th Nov 2024 @ 4:03pm

Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 5 Friday blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Question prompts are provided within reading records asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.

Please note that our spelling quiz will be every Thursday and our times tables quiz will be every Friday.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes, every night, on each of the websites.

Our learning this week in Year 5

English

This week, the children have continued to look at science fiction stories by watching a video clip showing what the future might look like. They have created vocabulary webs using words to describe what things like transport, people and homes might be like in the future. We have also, read the beginning of Tme Spinner by Roy Apps and wrote a summary of the first two chapters.

 Maths

This week, the children have been refining the process of written chunking for division with a focus to interpret remainders appropriately. Having practised written chunking, the children have then been learning how to use the same strategy for efficient mental partitioning. They used the familiar part-whole model to identify greater multiples of the divisor to solve three-digit by one-digit calculations.

Science

This week in science the children continued to explore the different planets in our solar system ordering them correctly and writing facts about them. The visit from the WonderDome on Tuesday morning greatly enhanced this learning and the children had many wonderful questions to ask.

Take a look at the gallery to see photographs of the WonderDome visit.

We had a great time completing the Gladiator obstacle course for Children in Need, take a look at the photographs in the gallery.

Next week

School Council Elections

Friday 22nd November will be our school council elections in school as part of parliament week. Any children who wish to run should give their name to their teacher on Monday 18th November, so that ballot papers can be prepared. They will then give a speech to their class on Friday 22nd November about why they would like to be considered as a class representative. Voting will take place on the Friday morning and the children with the most votes will be presented with their badges in worship the following week. Please note there will be no celebration worship on Friday 22nd November as the hall will be set up as a polling station.

Have a lovely weekend
