Year 6 Blog-Friday 11th October
Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 4:20pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 6 Friday blog.
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.
Annoucement:
Henry has kindly decided to host a bake sale in aid of Cancer Research UK. With the support of his mum, Henry will provide baked goods to sell on the school playground, after school on Friday 18th October. It would be lovely if the whole class could support Henry in this by also bringing in any baked goods to school this Friday. All in aid of a great charity. Well done Henry!
Wellbeing Week: This is a Wellbeing Homework Week
Hello Yellow
On World Mental Health Day, we wore yellow clothing and accessories to school, along with thousands of others across the UK. Thank you for helping us raise money for the Young Minds charity, showing young people that they’re not alone with their mental health.
We stand brighter, together.
Some wellbeing activities to try at home:
Please see the Doodle Boy doodle sheet and the Wellbeing Bingo activity sheet on the Files to Download section on our class page.
Homework-Wellbeing, Spellings & TTRS
Spellings -From today (Friday 11th October), we will look at our new spelling rule: hyphens. We have a poster to help us remind us of this rule. Please see below for a selection of spellings and children can access their latest test on Spelling Frame. The test for this spelling rule will be next Thursday. The children are being tested on their ability to apply the rule and so practising lots of different spellings is beneficial; they will be asked to spell ten words from this list.
Challenge: can you think of any sets of words which need a hyphen to change their meaning?
We have watched this youtube video to help us remember when to use a hyphen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F7wFwdcfKg
Maths: Next week we will move onto Properties of Number. Part of this learning is divisbility rules. Therefore, the children should begin to learn their divisibility rules. An example is that a whole-number (integer) is divisible by 10 if there is a 0 in the ones column. Next week I will test their ability to work out if a number is divisble by 2, 5, 10 and 3. Children should also access TTRS throughout the week so that they are achieveing automacity in their tables knowledge. The divisibilty document will be sent home and there is a copy attached.
Our learning this week in Year 6
English
This week in English we have focused upon our grammar skills and have be re-introduced to the perfect present and perfect past tenses. We dropped our 'auxiliary soldier' (has/had/was/were) into our sentences to place them in the perfect tense. For example, 'The dog jumped on the table' becomes 'The dog has jumped on the table' (perfect present) or 'The dog had jumped on the table' (perfect past). Next week we will look at the progressive tense.

Maths
This week we have added and subtracted integers using mental methods and jottings (rather than formal written methods). This has greatly improved our number skills and has consolidated our knoweldge of place value. Please keep practising divisibility rules.
Wellbeing Week
We've had a wonderful week of wellbeing! We have enjoyed yoga, the climbing frame and outdoor activities. We went into mixed classes to complete a series of wellbeing activities over two afternoons as well. It has been lovely to give the children a week of wellbeing.
Upcoming week
