Dear parents,

Welcome to the Year 6 Friday blog.

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.

Next Tuesday we will celebrate Odd Socks day by wearing them to school.

Odd Socks Day marks the start of Anti-Bullying Week. Odd Socks Day 2024 is taking place on Tuesday 12th November. It is supported by CBeebies presenter & ABA patron Andy Day and his band 'Andy and the Odd Socks'.

The Andy and the Odd Socks team came up with the idea for Odd Socks Day with us in 2017, and we work together every year to deliver the all inclusive message the event encourages.

Most importantly, Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique!

There is no pressure to wear the latest fashion or to buy expensive costumes.  All you have to do to take part is wear odd socks to your school, at work of at home, it couldn’t be simpler!  Odd Socks day will take place on the first day of Anti-Bullying Week each year to help raise awareness of bullying. We would like to invite participating schools and workplaces to ask participants to make a £1 donation - or any donation you think appropriate - to support us in continuing to coordinate the week every year.

Next Friday 15th November, we will support Children in Need by having a sporty day inspired by the Gladiators! Children to come to school in sporty clothes on Friday to take part in an obstacle course using the large apparatus in the school hall. (Please note children to wear school uniform on Tuesday and sporty clothes on Friday). We will also watch the Children in Need live stream for schools in the morning after assembly. A £1 donation is suggested and we will send all donations to this special charity.

Well done to all the children who entered School Council's poster competition; we have some fantastic entries!

NSPCC Booklet

Please find attached to our blog a handout from NSPCC which provides useful advice regarding our children gaining increasing indpendence.

Year 6 Lottery-Spelling Frame & TTRS

To encourage children to make good use of Spelling Frame and TTRS, I will announce the top 3 users each week.  These children will be awarded entries into a class lottery (3 entries for gold, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze).  At the end of the half term, we will draw the lottery and the winner will receive a £10 amazon voucher.  The more times you gain a top-spot, the greater your chance of winning.  You have to be in it to win it!

This week's winners (chosen on Thursday 7th November) are shown below.  Well done!

Homework

Reading Records-Every Monday we check the children's Reading Records as this is our way of ensuring that children are reading regularly at home.  Please encourage your child to read as regularly as possible and to also record this in their Reading Records.  We also request that a parent/grandparent or other adult signs their Reading Record at least once per week.  Thank you for your support with this.

Maths-Complete the long multiplication questions.  There is a modelled answer to remind you of the method.

Reading -Thank you to all children who have handed their books in by Thursday.   Please remind your child to complete their comprehension task and bring it to school by Thursday morning at the latest.  In addition to this, the children have now got their new guided reading books for this half-term; please ensure they read their books regularly.

This week they need to complete Set B Task 1.

Spellings -From today (Friday 8th November), we will look at our new spelling rule: word families.  Please see below for a selection of spellings and children can access their latest test on Spelling Frame.  The test for this spelling rule will be the first Thursday after half-term.  The children are being tested on their ability to apply the rule and so practising lots of different spellings is beneficial; they will be asked to spell ten words from this list.

Maths:

Our learning this week in Year 6

English

This week we delved into different sentence structures, in particular, expanded noun phrases.  The children practised these skills out-loud, before creating sentences in their books.  The final product was their own version of Clock Close, named 'Bomb Boulevard.'  I really enjoyed reading their stories!  Once again, Gareth joined us for Literacy Kicks.  This week the children looked at the paralympics; truly inspiring.

Maths

In maths, we have worked on long multiplication.  The children have practised using this written formal method and also answered word problems relating to long mulitplication.

History

This week in History we have been using our enquiry skills to infer information about different sources of information.  We have focused our learning on the role of evacuation during the Blitz.  Take a look at our gallery to see some pictures of our learning.

Have a fantastic weekend!
