Year 6 Blog-Friday 20th September
Date: 19th Sep 2024 @ 7:29am
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 6 Friday blog.
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.
As our class, we have thought about our school vision and values and created a motto for this year.
Leadership opportunities in Year 6
We have received a number of applications for team captains this week. The deadline is now extended until Monday 23rd September. If you wish to a team captain for Fire, Water, Air or Earth, please write a letter of application which gives reasons and examples of why you would be a good ambassador for your team, as well as ideas about what you would try to do as team captain.
Homework
Reading - The children have their guided reading books and are expected to read these regularly so we can enjoy our book discussions. This week they have received their CGP Comprehension books. I would like them to complete the comprehension questions for Set A Test 2. These books will be handed in no later than Thursday, so that they can be marked and returned.
Spellings - From today (Friday 20th September), we will look at our new spelling rule: ibly/ably. Please see below for a selection of spellings and children can access their latest test on Spelling Frame. The test for this spelling rule will be next Thursday. The children are being tested on their ability to apply the rule and so practising lots of different spellings is beneficial; they will be asked to spell ten words from this list.
Times tables - Times tables underpin our learning in maths and it vital that the children have rapid recall of all tables facts. We complete the Maths Frame multiplication tables check each Thursday-this is 25 questions set at 6 seconds each. Please continue to practise your times tables facts.
Our learning this week in Year 6
English
We have had a great time this week debating the case of Mrs Ramsbottom and questionning her parenting skills! This has culminated in the children writing a balanced argument about whether or Mrs Ramsbottom is a good mother. The children then peer assessed the work to scrutinise for punctuation and grammar; a really supportive introduction to peer-editing.
Maths
In Maths we have practised rounding numbers this week. We consider which digits we should focus upon to round larger-digit numbers. There are some great maths games on Maths Frame to help practise this key skill:

PE
In PE this week we have continued to develop our dances which are to the song 'Oh I do like to be beside the Seaside.' We have also continued to perfect our hockey ball-handling skills and making use of STEP to adapt our drills to suit our team.
Upcoming week:
Wednesday 25th September-Meet the teacher-please wait on the playground and I will call you in once the children are registered. It will be lovely to see as many of you there as possible and the powerpoint will be made available to those unable to attend.
Wednesday 18th September: Girls' football fixture-first match is at 4.15pm.
Have a look at our gallery to see us having a lovely play with our reception buddies.
