Year 6 Blog-Friday 15th November
Date: 22nd Oct 2024 @ 12:34pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 6 Friday blog.
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.
Chorley SSP are in school on Monday: children should come to school in their sporty clothes.
Parliament Week & School Council Voting
As part of our celebration of Parliament Week, we will be holiding our annual ballot for new School Council representatives. These representatives are democratically elected via a private ballot which will take place next Friday 22nd November (just like the real thing!). Children who wish to stand for school council are kindly asked to present a speech to their class stating why they think they would be a good representative and what they intend to do with the role. This speeches should be ready no later than Monday so that children have the opportunity to practise them with me, before presenting to the class. Every child in Year 6 is elilgible to stand for School Council, regardless of whether they have/haven't or are currently serving.
Every child who stands for School Council will receive a special acknowledgement for doing so.

Homework
I will run a homework clinic from 12.30pm each Tuesday lunchtime, for any children struggling to complete their homework.
Reading -Thank you to all children who have handed their books in by Thursday. Unfortunately, there are still a few who are not handing their books in on time. Please remind your child to complete their comprehension task and bring it to school by Thursday morning at the latest.
This week they need to complete Set B Task 2.
Spellings -From today (Friday 15thNovember), we will look at our new spelling rule: -ough. There is a video attached to this blog which explains the rule. Please see below for a selection of spellings and children can access their latest test on Spelling Frame. The test for this spelling rule will on Thursday. The children are being tested on their ability to apply the rule and so practising lots of different spellings is beneficial.
Maths: This week, we have practised long division. For homework, I would like the children to try the long division method. I have added a worked example to help with this. If you cannot remember the method at all, please create a 'menu box' for the divisor (the number to the left of the bus stop, e.g., 17). I will hold a homework clinic on Tuesday lunchtime at 12.30pm for any children who are struggling.
Our learning this week in Year 6
English
We have learnt about Anne Frank this week. Through our study of the inspirational young lady, we have had a virtual tour of the annex, where Anne hid with her family. We have used extracts from her diary to infer how she may have felt and we have used our knowledge of World War 2 to try to understand the circumstance she found herself in. Anne Frank's rich vocabulary and language has allowed us to write in her style.
Maths
This week we have re-visited long mulitplication; both through practising the technique and applying it to different problems.
RE
In RE, we have thought about what it means to prepare for a special event and made comparisons with advent.
