Year 6 Friday Blog 14th June

Date: 12th Jun 2024 @ 8:04pm

Dear parents,

Welcome back to the Year 6 Friday blog!

Thank you for your support with our new weekly blogs. It has been fantastic to hear the children talking about them in school this week. Every Friday the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school.   Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame or your homework book can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below. Please ask if your child requires a reminder of their log in details for Spelling Frame or TT Rock Stars.

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Homework

The rivers homework was a huge success; I have never seen so many wonderfully creative outcomes generated from a piece of reserach.  It has really invigorated the chidlren's learning-a huge well done to everyone for this!

Homework for Summer 2-As we enter our final half term of Year 6, I have taken the opportunity to create a set of 4 pieces of homework, each feeding directly into our learning in the classroom.  I have decided to give out these 4 mini-projects altogether so that the children can get to work on what inspires them, but please do take note of the deadlines.  It is vitally important that the children bring their completed work to school on time as it will be used during their lessons.  You will find the homework document below.

Important notice:  can children please bring in a blindfold/scarf for our Friday PE lesson next week.  It will be needed as part of our Outdoor Adventurous Activities curriculum.

Important notice:  I will give out the new hoodies next Monday, instead of today.  They are stored safely in our classroom, ready to be distributed.

SPECIAL REQUEST:  Thank you for all of the adorable 'first day of school' pictures.  If you haven't had chance yet, please do email a copy to:[email protected]

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please ensure your child is still reading every night.  Our libary day is Monday, when the class are given the opportunity to change their books.  We also have plenty of books from our class library to choose from.

Spellings -

Times table / Division facts - Although SATS are now distant memory, it is still vitally important we stay sharp on our timestables knowledge.  Please ensure you are logging into TTRS to practise.  This should be at least 3 times per week and I will log in to check.

I will be keeping track of all children logging into both Spelling Frame and TT Rockstars. I recommend 10 minutes on both, as many nights as possible.

Our learning this week in Year 6

English

This week we have focused on the fantastically dark 'Scottish' play (apparently it is bad luck to say the name!).  We have dramatised it, so that we can understand the plot.  The children have then selected deliciously dark vocabulary to write an ominous setting description, a warning letter from Banquo to MacBeth and finally a character description of Lady MacBeth.  It has been lots of fun reading them!

Maths-exciting news about our Derian House Project

We have forged ahead with our business projects.  This week the children have pitched their business ideas; following this they were required to finalise their costing and bid for a set amount of money.  We brought our ideas together as a class, made some final calculations and then I went shopping!  Most importantly, Ann-Marie from Derian House came to listen to some of our bids, before awarding us with £50!

As a class, we are committed to not only earning back the £50 but of course raising as much money as possible for Derian House.  There will be more news to follow on the newsletter!

Science

We began our new topic about electricity on Monday.  We spent lots of time re-activating our prior knowledge from Year 4.  We watched a video of a battery ontop of a magnet being use to propel some copper wire-very interesting!  We are looking forward to getting back to building circuits; this will also be very important for our DT project.

News and announcements

  1. Remember: Leyland Trucks trip on Wednesday.  School uniform-back in time for lunch
  2. Please check the costume letter for Shakespeare Rocks-we have ironed out a lot of the parts this week and so your child should be able to tell you what their costume requirements are.  If not, encourage them to ask again and I will check.
  3. Remember to bring a blindfold (or scarf that can act as a blindfold) each week for our Friday PE lesson.

Have a look at our gallery to see what we have been doing on our enterprise project this week.

Have a fantastic weekend!
