Our learning this week in Year 6

New!  We are spotlighting a new European country each half-term.  Our country for this half-term is Slovakia.  We have watched a promotional video about the country and I would like the children to do their research to come and put on our geography board; all facts big or small are welcome!

English

This week we have taken inspiration from the wonderful Nigella Lawson, to write instructions.  Looking at the various grammatical features, we have created our own recipe instructions which show-case lots of Year 6 punctuation.  Take a look at the video below, which we based our writing upon.

Maths

We have played Quiz Quiz Trade in order to embed our vocabulary for shape and area.  We have re-visited the area of triangle and can now find the area of a parallelogram. We have also practised using a protractor to draw angles.  Finally, we have used cubes to investigate how to calculate the volume of a shape.

RE

We have re-visited the bible story of the ascension of Jesus and looked at aspects of this in artwork.  Mrs Yarker is now leading the children in creating their own pieces of beautiful ascension artwork.

Science

We have started our new topic which is 'Living things and their habitats.'  This week we have re-visited our prior learning. going all the way back to Year 1!  We have enjoyed looking at many different plants and animals and identifying their observable characterisitcs.
