Year 6 Friday Blog-Friday 4th October
Date: 1st Oct 2024 @ 5:01pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 6 Friday blog.
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.
Next week is Wellbeing Week
We will be having some off-curriculum time to participate in lots of different activities which can support our mental wellbeing.
Leadership opportunities in Year 6
There is a leadership opportunity for every member of Year 6. Next week, the children will told their leadership roles.
Homework
Reading -Thank you to all children who have handed their books in by Thursday. Unfortunately, there are still a few who are not handing their books in on time. Please remind your child to complete their comprehension task and bring it to school by Thursday morning at the latest.
This week they need to complete Set A Task 4.
Spellings -Please note, a hard copy of our spelling overview for Year 6 has been sent home with children this week. This can also be found on our class page.
From today (Friday 4th October), we will look at our new spelling rule: ei ie. We have a poster to help us remind us of this rule. Please see below for a selection of spellings and children can access their latest test on Spelling Frame. The test for this spelling rule will be next Thursday. The children are being tested on their ability to apply the rule and so practising lots of different spellings is beneficial; they will be asked to spell ten words from this list.
Here is a video which explains the rule: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDGrc7Egclg
Maths: Next week we will move onto Properties of Number. Part of this learning is divisbility rules. Therefore, the children should begin to learn their divisibility rules. An example is that a whole-number (integer) is divisible by 10 if there is a 0 in the ones column. Next week I will test their ability to work out if a number is divisble by 2, 5, 10 and 3. Children should also access TTRS throughout the week so that they are achieveing automacity in their tables knowledge. The divisibilty document will be sent home and there is a copy attached.
Our learning this week in Year 6
English
This week we have used 'Colourful Semantics' to help us with our sentence structure and grammar. This approach helps us to look at the different parts of a sentence and therefore to create a variety of different sentences suitable for Year 6! We have put this into practice when we have written about our museum visits; some of this work will be on our new corridor display.
Maths
In Maths we have continued to look at solving problems with two unknowns and seeing how bar models can help us with this. This clip give a demonstration of how bar models can help us solve problems: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8d5OPaXqAAA
History & RE
We had a lovely and highly-educational trip to the Manchester Jewish Museum and the Imperial War Museum. The behaviour of the children was outstanding and they dipslayed vast amounts of knowledge. We were very fortunate to learn more about Judaism and also the customs of Jewish people, which provides us with empathy when we consider their experience during World War 2. The Imperial War Museum offers a wealth of real artefacts, together with comprehensive descriptions, which has really built on our learning.
