Year 6 Friday Blog-Friday 13 September
Date: 9th Sep 2024 @ 8:23pm
Dear parents,
Welcome to the Year 6 Friday blog.
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.
As our class, we have thought about our school vision and values and created a motto for this year.
Leadership opportunities in Year 6
The class have been asked to place their name next to any leadership responsibilities they would like to hold this year. These include jobs such as: door monitor, librarian, ipad monitor and every member of the class will receive a responsibility. I was also delighted to see that almost the entire class have a desire to become a team captain, which is wonderful! For those aspiring to this role, we simply ask that they write a letter of application which outlines how they have contributed to school life so far and also what their vision is for the role of Team Captain-how could they effectively lead their team? These applications will then be considered by the teaching team, before we make a decision. The deadline is next Friday 20th September.
Homework
Reading - The children have their guided reading books and are expected to read these regularly so we can enjoy our book discussions. This week they have received their CGP Comprehension books. I would like them to complete the comprehension questions for Set A Test 1. These books will be handed in no later than Thursday, so that they can be marked and returned. These books will be sent home on Monday.
Spellings - From today (Friday 13th September), we will look at our new spelling rule: ible/able. Please see below for a selection of spellings and children can access their latest test on Spelling Frame. The test for this spelling rule will be next Thursday. The children are being tested on their ability to apply the rule and so practising lots of different spellings is beneficial; they will be asked to spell ten words from this list.
Times tables - Times tables underpin our learning in maths and it vital that the children have rapid recall of all tables facts. We complete the Maths Frame multiplication tables check each Thursday-this is 25 questions set at 6 seconds each. Please continue to practise your times tables facts.
Our learning this week in Year 6
English
We have continued to enjoy the poem 'The Lion and Albert.' This week we have performed stanzas from the poem and have had a debate over the parenting skills of Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom!
Maths
In Maths we can confidently read and write numbers beyond one million. We have looked at the structure of these numbers in more detail and can use our place value knowledge to mentally add and subtract from them.
History
It was fascinating to study the artefacts which we have loaned from the Imperial War Museum, alongisde those brought in the children. We have used enquiry skills to infer what these artefacts could tell us about World War 2. Trip letters have also gone home for the Jewish Museum and Imperial War Museum; this trip will greatly enrich our learning.
Upcoming week:
Tuesday 17th September: Year 5&6 visit Crucial Crew: POSTPONED
Wednesday 18th September: Girls' football fixture
