At Euxton C.E. Primary School, we are a Maths Mastery school and members of the collaborative North North West Abacus Maths Hub.
What is maths mastery?
Maths mastery is a teaching and learning approach that aims for pupils to develop deep understanding of maths rather than being able to memorise key procedures or resort to rote learning.
Our aim and expectation is for all pupils to become fluent in the fundamental facts and concepts of maths for their year or key stage, to enable children to achieve mastery in maths, through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems.
Pupils are taught through whole-class interactive teaching, where the focus is on all pupils working together on the same lesson content at the same time, ensuring that all can master concepts before moving to the next part of the curriculum sequence. Children will have a solid understanding of the maths that has been taught so that they are confident and ready to move on to their next stage of maths and be able to progress on to more advanced material. Deeper learning tasks are provided to challenge the more able mathematicians. Pupils develop conceptual understanding, the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately, solve unfamiliar word problems and use the appropriate mathematical vocabulary to explain their reasoning.
Maths mastery is a journey that the teacher and pupils go on together, with regular diagnostic assessment to check the pupils understanding. We use Lancashire KLIPs (Key Learning Indicators of Performance) to support our teaching of the National Curriculum so that any gaps in learning can be easily identified and addressed. Children will then be able to move on through the stages and naturally support their progression. We ensure that no pupil is left behind and all pupils develop a ‘can-do’, positive attitude and self-belief in their math’s capability. We want all pupils to shine and fulfil their potential in this subject.
